We use an ultrasonic KLAudio machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. - This beautiful album was engineered by Rudy Van Gelder in his Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, home studio where so much jazz history was made. It features guitar innovators Lonnie Johnson and Elmer Snowden together for the first time--despite a friendship going back to the 1920s when both appeared on some of the earliest jazz and blues 78s. Johnson, the father of single-note six-string soloing, is in marvelous voice on this selection of blues, ballads, and jazz, crooning the double-entendre "Jelly Roll Baker" and the heartache-laden "Back Water Blues" (a Bessie Smith tune he first cut in 1927) with a marksman's sense of pitch and chilling nuance. Snowden serves mostly as accompanist. But these men play so closely that they seem to be sharing every breath.
- "BLUES & BALLADS" is 44 minutes in length. The second disc is 43 minutes in length,each approximately.The sound on this album is remarkable -each instrument is clean and crisp (thanks to Rudy Van Gelder who recorded these tracks), and the vocals have a real presence.
This music is some of the most "human" music you;ll most likely hear for a long time. Human in that's it's honest and straight forward, with little in the way of pretentiousness. It's laid-back,soft and gentle music, but infused with both feeling and swing. Listening to these tracks connects the listener with the musicians on a somewhat mysterious level-the atmosphere just draws you in. Once in a while the comments between Snowden and Johnson sound a bit self-aware,but that's okay because the music is so captivating. This is music that has to be listened to-not just heard. Put this LP on at the end of a long hard day, or late at night, and see what happens. - ................................................
Lonnie Johnson is well known in jazz and blues circles as a guitarist of uncommon skill. His vocals are smooth and warm, yet knowing. He played solo and with many jazz and blues greats throughout his career. Many listeners will know him through his duets with Eddie Lang. Elmer Snowden, and old friend, has played and lead a number of bands through his early years,the most famous was probably THE WASHINGTONIANS, which became the Duke Ellington Band.
Together, Johnson on gently swinging electric guitar,and Snowden on acoustic guitar usually in a supportive roll, give a good foundation for Johnson's gentle vocals. With Wendell Marshall on bass which grounds the album,and gives needed depth for both musicians,the sound feels complete.
"Blues and ballads", released in 1960 is the more or less "laid back" but with a clear winning appeal. From the first track ("Haunted House") through "Memories of You",to "I'll Get Along Somehow",the blues are never far away. The slower tracks on this set have a wistful sadness about them-which is why they sound so "human". Even the instrumentals ("Savoy Blues' for example) have a certain weighty sadness to them. The exception is "Elmer's Blues",a swinging groover still manages to sound laid back.
- "Blues and Ballads" is an extraordinary example of blues and early jazz. Johnson is masterful throughout. Elmer Snowden was the first leader of what became the Duke Ellington band- and, trust me, you had no idea he could play like this. Buy this like yesterday.

- The vinyl: Rated: VG++ tricky, because plays M- clean audio. Side one is clean, side two has a few scuff lines; only light (soft and LIGHT - like finger nail ) so despite visuals, plays extremely well given the age of a tender 60 years already. Both royal blue and silver Prestige/Bluesville labels are VERY clean - no dirt, no soil and no spindle marks.
A cool addition to anyone's music library!
