Description

SHANGO DANCE BAND (6th Infantry Brigade) 'Position Pass Power' EMI (Nigeria) NEMI (LP) 0023. 3 track vinyl LP.  The jewel in the crown of my brother-in-law's collection! Where did he find it? I'll never know now. This is the ultra-rare, sought after, original LP issued privately in Nigeria for other military personnel in the 6th Infantry. Reputedly no more than 500 copies were ever made of the original. Known to be 'a long-lost Nigerian gem' and 'Insanely wonderful'. Ojo Okeli was the man behind the record and had joined the army after musical stints with the 'Lagos Cool Cats', Rex Williams and the 'Western Toppers Highlife Band' which was a Fela favourite. The first Afro Funk baseline coming out of Africa was by Ojo Okeli and the band, on this record, took the fundamentals of what became Fela's Afrobeat but added new guitar and horns which gave it a 'supernatural twist with soul overtones', 'a raucous psychedelic edge'. A heady brew then. After the Army Okeli joined Fela in the quintet Koola Lobitos and was then responsible for introducing Tony Allen to Fela. The producer was Odion Iruoje who signed Fela to EMI.
'Boiling point of hip-shaking sexiness and rage. The deepest Afrobeat psyche-soul hustle' Boomkat.
'Legendary, ultra-rare Afrobeat killer' Betinos.
'Insanely wonderful' Dusty Groove.
After a lot of research I can only find 2 copies of the original 1974 LP have been unearthed and offered for sale in the past 10 years. One was a warped LP with a poor cover and graded by the seller as G- and sold for £390. The other was one of the most expensive records sold on Discogs in 2021 for £2785-89! And 248 people want a copy.
Ok, it's fab that there has been a CD and LP re-issue by Comb and Razor but a true collector will know that nothing beats having the rare original. Likely to be your only chance of owning this absolute important rarity. Sent properly packaged and insured.
This is the last LP to be listed. What follows are cassettes. Thank you to all the buyers so far. I hope you are enjoying the music. Will do positive feedback to all shortly.

REMEMBER: I combine postage. If you buy 2 records at the same time you will get £4 returned, and if you buy 3 then £8 is returned. This is only if all records are purchased at the same time, the value is under £150 and it is sent to a UK address.
Record:   G. trying to be conservative. Side 1 looks ok but side 2 has a light scratch 25mm long on track 1 and a longish scuff on track 2.  Paper sleeve:  On the tatty side-see photos. Crease, small tear at top and a damaged edge. Slit at bottom. Cover: Please look at photos and make up your own mind. I'd say that the cover has some ink rubbing ,a complete rim mark, corner and edge wear and remains of price sticker.Reverse ditto with the tiniest amount of ink loss. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------  . ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please be sure to read ALL the following: I am bringing to Ebay my brother-in-law's 30-40 year old collection of African and, later, other music genres. Sadly, after a difficult time, he passed away a few months ago and the proceeds from the sale of his music will all be going to his immediate family. I am not keeping anything except the postage which will be at cost. He was a lovely man and sorely missed by everyone. A visit to their home would inevitably include listening to a small part of his music collection, some more 'far out' than others as he had a wide taste. He always said that the record collectors he met were really friendly and perhaps some of his collection will pass on to people he knew. Anyway, music deserves to find a good home and over the next few weeks/months I'll see if I can add to your collection. I was also interested in African music but had generally washed up on the soukous/highlife shore whilst he was particularly interested in Nigerian Afrobeat/Juju and Fuji.
There will be some interesting things coming along. Apart from LPs there are cassettes to be listed as well. Because I will only have the time to list in smallish batches please keep checking my listings regularly as some items will not hang around on the site for long.
Grading the records:  Some years ago I sold my LPs and the means of playing them so I haven't played any of the records listed. When I sold my collection I looked across the LP in a bright light and listed any marks/scratches that could be seen. This seemed to work and there were no complaints. I'll tend to make things sound worse than they are in order that there are no disappointments. All records I will call  VG, even if appearing mint, and will note faults.
As you know if you come across a record you want the chances are that you may never see another copy so you buy it and hope for the best. My brother-in-law bought new but also a lot of second hand records so there is no idea of how many hands it has been through. But, if you remember that they are 40-60 years old then it isn't surprising if they have issues.
Postage: In UK I will only send out with tracking / signature with Royal Mail. Generally Tracked 48.Thanks to Ebay's 'improvements' I will normally list the postage as 'free' because I don't want any buyer postage and selecting EVRI-too many problems. The items will be sent in professional record packaging which can hold 3 LPs for the postage cost of 1 if the value is less than £150. Items above this amount will be insured and be sent by Parcelforce.  I get proof of postage for all items. If you order more than 1 item in the same package, and there are postage savings, I will refund the over amount to you.
For example 3 items totalling less than £150 in the same package will save you £8 ! Worth thinking about......
Overseas Buyers: PLEASE PLEASE put any items into your basket first. If you buy individually Ebay Global Shipping will charge you postage for every item! By putting the order in your basket you will get a combined postage.I only send via Ebay Global Shipping. Please note postage to Europe and particularly USA can be high.
Any taxes/import duties are the buyer's responsibility.
