Produced by Metallica with Flemming Rasmussen, and mixed by Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero, the album is known for its complex arrangements, aggressive sound, and socially conscious lyrics. It also marks the first appearance of bassist Jason Newsted on a Metallica studio album.
