\ USA - AVCO RECORDS - 33010
STILL SEALED 1970 ORIGINAL ...a rare never opened hard bluesy progressive collectible by an obscure East Coast group known as THE WEIGHT who made but only this album. Sometimes, this 'Weight' are confused with the West Coast 'The Weight', who strangely both issued their only album in 1970. This album is far better of the two "Weight" bands, and actually far superior musicians to the other band, delivering good guitar/organ leads in original tunes with hard edged blues/prog/psych edges...
The WEIGHT are an almost totally unkown obscurity courtesy of the Avco Embassy label by a group from New York. The album described in some circles as “progressive psych” starts off with “The Night The Pig Got Loose”, featuring a wild account of a drug bust told in an hippie tripper sort of way, and then shifts to a moving ballad musically similar to Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released” with the weird title of “Mr.M, Mr.N, and Mr.C (With Help From Mr.D)” (maybe the Mr.D is Dylan they’re referring to). That is the only tune like that, and as the album progresses, it has some nice guitar/organ interplay similar in style to a hardrock/progressive sound with a solid sound.
Credited with penning all seven tracks, lead singer Peter Masi had an interesting voice. Technically he wasn't the most accomplished performer you've ever heard, but his dry, craggy delivery was well suited for the band's mix of blues-rock with psych edges. It's also one of those albums that seems to get better with repeated spins, tracks like 'I'm Sure We're Gonna Die', 'Overhead Ego' and 'Open Your Gate' revealing some surprisingly complex structures and arrangements that were initially overlooked. Highlights included the blazing 'Overhead Ego' and the atypically catchy 'Disillusion # 1'.
