This pressing actually sounds pretty good.

It is certainly one of the most analog sounding versions I've heard, high praise in my book. We were certainly not impressed byt the Warner Brothers 180g Double LP that came out recently, mastered by Stan Ricker at half-speed. We noted that it was "too bright and the bass was sloppy. Yet another bad Half-Speed bites the dust. The Simply Vinyl version kills this audiophile piece of crap." We stand by that estimation.

Note that the vinyl for some of these Simply Vinyl titles was never as dead silent as we would have liked it to be. If you have a fear of light ticks and pops this may not be the right pressing for you, as SV records commonly had some slight surface noise in places.

Our Hot Stamper pressings of the album are of course dramatically better sounding, but a lot more money too. We cannot offer you a better sounding version than the Simply Vinyl pressing you see here at anywhere near this price. Commentary from Our Last Hot Stamper Shootout

Imports vs. Domestics

Of course no two copies sound alike, but there are some fairly consistent traits to both the British copies and the American ones. The best Brit imports are very rich, warm, and sweet, but most of them are dead and veiled. The Hot Stamper domestic copies (mastered by Robert Ludwig) have more meat on the bones down low and rock like you wouldn't believe. We're calling this one a draw -- there are amazing domestic pressings and amazing import pressings, but the average copy of either is hardly worth the vinyl it was pressed on.

Amazingly Analog Master Tape Sound

Both sides of this bad boy are SUPERB. Drop the needle on So Far Away -- it's airy, open, and spacious, yet incredibly rich and full-bodied. The bottom end really delivers the goods -- it is punchy and meaty with lots of deep, tight bass. The vocals are Right On The Money -- breathy and full with lots of texture and ambience. The 3-D quality to the soundfield here is something that you just won't hear on most copies. The overall sound is lively, dynamic, and very natural.

The Simply Vinyl Pressing

We've recommended the Simply Vinyl pressing in the past. It's a nice record (if you can get your hands on one) but it's not really a match for the Hot Stampers. The copies we auditioned rated about A minus for side one and solid A for side two -- darn good for a reissue and substantially better than the typical copy, but not in a league with an exceptional pressing like this one.

AMG 4 Star Rave Review Brothers in Arms brought the atmospheric, jazz-rock inclinations of Love Over Gold into a pop setting, resulting in a surprise international best-seller... What kept the record selling was Mark Knopfler's increased sense of pop songcraft — "Money for Nothing" had an indelible guitar riff, "Walk of Life" is a catchy up-tempo boogie variation on "Sultans of Swing," and the melodies of the bluesy "So Far Away" and the down-tempo, Everly Brothers-style "Why Worry" were wistful and lovely.
