Scott Walker's success as a teen idol singer with the Walker Brothers in no way prepared listeners for the mordant, despairing lyrics of his solo debut.
His debut found a surprisingly large audience - in Britain, anyway, where it reached the Top Three in 1967 but this audience would soon drift away as subsequent material became ever more personal and challenging.
Poke behind the velvet curtain of the lush orchestral arrangements here, and one finds a surprisingly literate existentialist at the helm of these proceedings.
His lyrical nuances were probably lost on his audience of predominately teenage girls, though they've earned him a small cult audience that endures to this day.
Besides presenting three of his own compositions, Walker covers tunes by Weill/Mann, Tim Hardin, and Andre & Dory Previn on this album, as well as three songs by his favourite writer, Jacques Brel.
Highlights include his exquisitely anguished rendition of Brel's classic "Amsterdam" and his dramatic cover of the early-'60s Toni Fisher pop ballad "The Big Hurt."

Track Listing:
Side 1: Mathilde / Montague Terrace (In Blue) / Angelica / The Lady Came From Baltimore / When Joanna Loved Me / My Death
Side 2: The Big Hurt / Such A Small Love / You're Gonna Hear From Me / Through A Long And Sleepless Night / Always Coming Back To You / Amsterdam

LABELS: The labels are clean and unmarked with barely a spindle trace to be seen - this copy has seen little play - NEAR MINT
VINYL Visual: Both surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen with a few superficial light marks (especially on Side One) but these are purely cosmetic and have no audio consequence and may have possibly been there since new - visually VERY GOOD+ / EXCELLENT
VINYL Audio: Sensational sound reproduction throughout - crystal clear, clean, crisp, sharp and vibrant sound - incredibly strong and fresh and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing, and it's always an immense pleasure to return to this wonderful LP) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no real surface noise and no loud clicks or pops. The run-ins and track separations are practically silent, the sound quality is simply sensational and the whole LP plays to an extremely high standard with all frequencies bright and clear with no discernible groove-wear or distortion. Critically graded a very strong EXCELLENT++ for audio (it's practically flawless) this is a great copy and very, very highly recommended indeed
SLEEVE: The fully laminated sleeve is in beautiful condition. The laminated surfaces are clean and unmarked with a deep, glass-like gloss and the edges and spine are crisp and square with practically no wear to speak of (just a little corner bumping). There is a light crease to the bottom corner but otherwise, this is a wonderful example - EXCELLENT++
