HIDEOUSLY SCARCE production review ACETATE of 1966 garage banger "Why" b/w "When I Look at You" by THE LAST WORDS, whose band name was changed to ROADS END for the official release of the 45 (the band hailed from Massachusetts). These versions of the tracks seem to be the same as those issued, EXCEPT that to these ears the guitar solo on the manic "Why" sounds significantly louder/hotter/higher in the mix (I only played that side once, just to record it). The "Why" side has a missing 1/2" piece of lacquer on the outermost edge (see scan), which does not affect play at all; that side is otherwise all there, plays fine 'n' dandy, but could use a good cleaning (as I have no experience cleaning acetates, I'll leave that to you). Unfortunately, the other side—a pretty bland ballad, IMHO—hasn't fared as well over the last 48 years; besides also needing a cleaning and missing lacquer in two areas outside the groove along the outer edge (1/2" and 1/8" spots), there's a 1/4" square area near the middle of the side where the lacquer is loose and flaking. Playing this side would not seem like a good idea; I only played the first few seconds to compare it to the official release, and it seems to be the same version. In any case, this is a very rare piece and may very well be the only one of its kind in existence. To any garage reissue folks out there, if the version of "Why" is indeed a different mix, I'd LOVE to hear it on a comp! E-mail with questions, and I'll do my best to answer.
