DESCRIPTION:
Trixie Smith (c1885 - 1943) worked on the vaudeville circuit before making her first recordings for Black Swan Records in 1922, among which was "My Man Rocks Me (With One Steady Roll)," . . . of historical interest as THE FIRST SECULAR RECORDING TO USE THE PHRASE ROCK AND ROLL."
OVERALL CONDITION:
Tiny EDGE-CHIP on B-side not affecting playing grooves. Also there is an area of slight wear about 1" along the edge of the B-side (at about 9 o'clock).
There is some GREYING in the grooves and numerous SCRATCHES & MARKS overall.
ONE POSSIBLE STRESS CRACK just starting to form on A-side, but it could also just be a rather severe SCRATCH. It appears to run along the ridges of the grooves about halfway down toward the center of the record. Whether stress-crack or deep scratch, it hasn't yet weakened the record at all.
The BLACK SWAN label is a little more worn on A-side with one small area where the paper is scraped-off (see scan below).
PLAYING ON MY PLAYER:
Both sides have the usual snaps, crackles & pops. A-side has several scratched areas where the needle "clicks" a bit but doesn't skip or get stuck. The background noise is minor to medium - the music still comes through quite well.
This is a scarce classic Blues record on the BLACK SWAN label in quite "playable" condition. It also immortalizes the first recorded use of the term "ROCK & ROLL."
