Hard Edged Bluesy Psych Underground 1971 RARE ORIGINAL!
SAROFEEN And SMOKE
\ USA - GWP RCORDS - ST 2029
Original 1971 first pressing vinyl of obscure blues hardrock featuring a strong female singer called Sarofeen...
Sarofeen's vocal style has been compared to Janis Joplin, Ellen McIllwaine of 'Fear Itself', & the Shocking Blue's (deceased) Mariska Veres, and if you like those vocalists you should give her a chance. Even if you don't like that heavy, bluesy 60's female vocal style you should still give it a try. Sarofeen & John Martin (especially the latter) wrote some excellent material for the album and the band (listed below) is strong... Gutsy, bluesy vocals... reminiscent of Shocking Blue's Mariska Veres, or Janis Joplin without the rasp. Well worth searching out. The LP starts with the smoking psychedelic blues of Susan Jane. Cream Of Nowhere is a heavier, more ragged jam while It's Love sees Sarofeen deliver a thoughtful and soulful ballad. A quality dancer comes in the shape of a gritty take on Swamp Man.
Side 2 highlights are the mid-paced rock of Witch which features some great (and subtle) instrumentation from the backing band. Tomorrow is moody piece with some decent harmonica from Martin. The swirling dirge that is the take on Rocky Mountain Blues closes this interesting period piece.
Dave Arliss - bass
