Description
SAX 2518 B/S Ed1 : NATHAN MILSTEIN : VIOLIN : VIVALDI 4 Concerti : RARE
This is one of a number of vinyl records from the 1950’s & 60’s listed this week which we no longer listen to. Little played, the records are still in very good condition, the covers sometimes less so.
I have carefully examined this record and listened to it a number of times in order to be able to record as accurately as I can anything which may be seen and its impact on the listening experience.
Gradings are based on the “Record Collector Magazine's Guide” set out in the eBay Guides together with notes about condition added. Extracts from the Gramophone Magazine review written at the time of the record’s release are included, with the permission of the publishers, where these are available.
RECORD GRADINGSIDE 1 - EXCELLENT
This whole side played quite excellently. There is almost no surface sound of any kind throughout. The Largo on Band 2 is a very revealing piece; the solo violin playing very quietly with a soft pizzicato in the background yet I heard absolutely nothing unwanted throughout the band, and the whole side plays almost exactly the same. Only on Band 5 did I hear a solitary tick just as it begins, another about a minute later and one more just at the end. It is a delight to listen to
The surface is clean and bright and the labels appear to be almost free of spindle marks. The surface does have the usual sleeve rubbing hairlines and swirls and there are a very few short, about 5mm long, fine lines. There is also a scuffed area made up of 3 semi parallel marks which extend from band 2 to the run-off area at about 3 o’clock – it can just be seen in the photograph. But, none of these surface blemishes produced any significant unwanted sound.
SIDE 2 – VERY GOOD +
Again, the surface is clean and still gleaming. There are the frequently seen light hairlines, scuffs and, again, a few needle-like marks on the surface. One of these, on band 3 at 9 o’clock, is not a continuous hairline but one made up of 3 small marks in-a-line, about a centimetre long. The most obvious mark, however, and clearly visible in the photograph at 5 o’clock, is not nearly as damaging as its appearance suggests. I will deal with this mark first.
I do not think this mark has been caused by a stylus but is a ‘graze’ to the surface of the record and while it does produce some unwanted sounds, these are mainly intermittent not continuous. I have noted the times at which sounds occur and will happily provide more details about them to any interested buyer:
On band 1, after 20 seconds there were about 6 light ticks; then, between 1:22 and 1:30 there are 2 or 3 similar sounds which are just discernable and from 2:45 to 2:55 a series of repetitive, very light ticks. There is then one tick in the break between band 1 & 2.
On band 2, from 3:15 to 3:55 there is a run of repetitive ticks which get a little louder as they progress, but not annoyingly so, and at 4:10 there are 4 background ticks.
And that is all the unwanted sound I heard from this clearly visible surface mark.
On band 3, the ‘broken’ hairline I referred to earlier produced 10 repetitive ticks after about a minute of the band, 3 more after 2:07 and a couple more at 2:25.
The remainder of the side plays just the same as side 1. Like Band 2 on side 1, Band 5 on this side is again a Largo and is a piece which is also particularly revealing of the condition of the record. It played beautifully.
This really is a lovely record to listen to and the blemishes, which I have tried to describe as accurately as possible, did not produce sounds which spoiled or intruded on my enjoyment of listening to it.
COVER GRADING
EXCELLENT
I really cannot fault this cover. It is unmarked and without damage, even at the corners. There is just a crease in the laminate on the front, which can be seen in the photograph, and in a couple of places, where the applied laminate did not cover all of the card, there is some feint soiling. It is almost perfect
I always listen to all the records I offer and try to give a clear description of any faults I see or hear
I have no wish for you to be disappointed by your purchase. If you think the grading/description was unfair or unreasonable when you receive the record, you may return it and you will have a full refund of all that you have paid me
All I require is that you contact me within 7 days of its receipt to tell me you intend to return it, and that I receive the record in the same condition as it was when it was sent to you
