SAX 2484 Moussorgsky PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION & Debussy too
1963 Edition in Great Condition & Cleaned by Degritter
This is beautiful and dynamic music & very well recorded. It is performed by Lorin Maazel conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra. Album first released in1963. Features two works of music by Mussorgsky and Debussy.I once owned 72 lineal feet of mostly pristine LP’s, many played maybe once or not at all — I was collecting way too much! I pared down to a smaller collection after selling my state-of-the-art stereo system (VPI turntable / Graham tonearm / Benz Micro cartridge) about 20 + years ago. This record has been stored unplayed under ideal conditions since that disposal. My decision to end my "high-end" playing days was also due to a deteriorating hearing condition. I have only played this LP twice, once back then in my "high-end" days and once again recently before offering it now for sale.
Overall LP condition: Appears unplayed and visually overall it is excellent (no scratches). It is in very nice shape for a 60 year old LP! It plays flat too. The LP’s spine hole is clean and round but there is a black mark on label next to hole (extremely minor).
Overall character of play: It plays very nicely — with good orchestral “weight” in the lower mid range and, to me, a not too lively top-end. Background vinyl noise is very low - the Degritter record cleaning certainly aids in lowering background sounds!
I have no qualms representing this particular LP as excellent sounding overall, with "defects" having minimal impact on the music. While I conservatively rate is as VG+, it's overall condition and sound quality makes me want to say it is really an "Excellent" record. But it isn't perfect - from my notes based on single play:
Side 1 There are two light tics right near the end of the Debussy piece. Then before and into the beginning of the Mussorgsky work, there are 8 or 9 light "thumps", the last ones being "buried" by the louder music. These are absolutely easier to listen through, compared to obnoxious loud ticks or pops. The loudness of “sounds" I described above, is subjective obviously.
Side 2 Two soft tics detected about 40% & 50% into the LP. After listening, I gave this LP yet another cleaning, but didn't subject it to further turntable time.
I need to emphasize, I can not hear really high frequency light tics, if present. I doubt that is a problem due to the record's condition, plus it has been cleaned multiple times with my Degritter on the longest cycle (app 15+ minutes of ultrasonic treatment. Additionally, the end user should remove static.
Jacket Condition is very good. Front art work is laminated - and the LP has left a light imprint of it’s outer edge that you can see in the right light because the jacket material is thin. The dark black has areas where the "luster" is "dulled" somewhat. The art work is clean and I’ve tried to render the album’s original colors as true as I can (I’m a photographer).
Back text is very clean and readable. The LP spine is clean and readable. The structural integrity of the jacket is excellent.
The LP comes with a quality 6 mil outer sleeve over the jacket. When shipped the LP will be removed from jacket to prevent tears & damage to the jacket.
The LP will be shipped insured. Media Mail is a touch slower but inexpensive.
Equipment used to evaluate and care for the record: Also pictured is the VPI Scout turntable & Ortophon Black MM cartridge with Shibata stylus that I use for playback and my static removing rig & Degritter record cleaning machine. I'm trying to show how well this LP has been handled while in my possession. No brushes or other tools have touched the record.
