Welcome! Here is a first UK stereo press of Savoy Brown Getting to the Point (Decca SKL 4935). On this 1968 album, Savoy Brown’s second, the band consisted of Kim Simmonds, Chris Youlden, Dave Peverett, Rivers Jobe, and Roger Earl. Pianist Bob Hall is present as well.

Matrix numbers and mother/stamper codes are:

Side 1: ZAL-8276-IW; the mother/stamper is 1 C. The UK tax code JT appears in the runoff grooves as well.

Side 2: ZAL-8277-IW; the mother/stamper is 1 N. As with Side 1, JT appears in the runoff grooves.

Using the > Record Collector grading system, what do we have here?

Sleeve: The single sleeve grades Excellent-. It is signed “Printed in England by Clout & Baker Ltd.” The laminated front (with a much better design than the dumb American issue) is very presentable, with only scattered laminate wrinkles and minor surface wear. The unlaminated white back is somewhat soiled, hardly new-looking but not too bad for an album that is 43 years old. As is often seen, a thin line of discoloration runs all the way down along the edge where the lamination ends, on both the front (JUST inside of the edge where the record is inserted) and on the back (where the lamination wraparound ends). The laminated spine reveals “pinched” ends, correct for a sleeve of this vintage, and is fine except for four discoloration lines that represent laminate wrinkles beginning on the front. Corner wear is very, very minor and negligible. The edge where the record is inserted is quite good, with hardly any wear.

Vinyl: The vinyl grades Mint-. There are hardly any hairlines, and the record plays beautifully! Occasional, very minor background crackling is all you will ever hear, and this is really negligible. I really do not believe that you could upgrade this vinyl.

Labels: The unboxed Decca labels are strong, with average spindle tracking on both labels.

Inner Sleeve: This album has an early plastic-lined Decca inner sleeve with no date code, so I cannot say for sure if it the original one – but it is certainly an early one! This inner is in fine condition, with only the typical glue stains. There are no splits or wear whatsoever.

And, in the end: Savoy Brown were still very much a blues band at this time, and “Getting to the Point” exemplifies the sound of the British Blues boom. Except for the soiling on the white sleeve reverse side, this is a terrific example of an early unboxed UK Decca press. Please e-mail me with any questions.
