Brief Info: The fourth album from this London blues rock band. They became particularly popular in the United States, but their albums sold far less well in the UK. Side one is new studio material, the second side was recorded live at The Cooks Ferry Inn, Edmonton, London on Monday 12 May 1969. This a stunning mono example that appears hardly played.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front Clarifoil laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on the back via the spine. The main back panel is matt and smooth and includes the mono/stereo hole that is filled with the colour-coded inner sleeve (included as seen), these appeared in 1969. Red denoted a mono copy, blue a stereo, as-seen, this is a much rarer mono original. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker.

Lamination & Front: The front is superb, and easily grades near mint on its own merit. With very shiny fresh clear laminate with minimal traces of dulling, even under light, it only has a tiny lift on the top right corner tip which registers little, any other traces even tinier and hardly showing at all (bottom edge). Minimal creasing or marks, the graphic looks fantastic as-seen, this front will prove very difficult to match or find better.

Cover Back: The unprotected white back has only gently aged with some mainly light toning/small gentle stain near the edges. No rubbing or creasing, the peep-hole pristine as seen in close-up. A neat ‘disquerie’ sticker is on the back, totally mint with a price of 360 (francs?). .

Top Edge: Quite straight, smooth and unworn.

Bottom Edge: As above with just a tiny corner tip chip on the right.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, still quite straight with any compression minimal, a little natural gentle hints of crinkle only. All text is perfect unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this nicely centred for good measure as-seen again.

Corners: Any tip rubs small and light on the right. Better than excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this vintage late 1969’s cover. The front especially is beautiful, the back with only mild hints of age. So just enough to politely remind of its true vintage and it should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better, these are rarely seen this nice. A Decca red inner to fill the main cover peep-hole to denote a mono record inside. It has two superb crisp window circles and the polylining fresh and ultra clear. All edges unsplit with no repairs and hardly a crease of note to be seen. This has the 1968 date-code and is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): this appears hardly played and I doubt if it has seen light-of-day for decades. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed as you would expect from Decca. A copy appearing hardly used on all the evidence with any surface marks very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. Mostly wispy with no penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. A gentle trace of inner sleeve dulling critically under light has no affect on the superb mono sound whatsoever. This a trait of records in polylined inners left undisturbed for many years, this almost as light as it gets and practically invisible in room light. Visually a superb 49-year-old record that should please many, if not most fans and collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive blues-rock gem plays up to and even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, barely anything which is remarkable for a mono mode record of such age. This a superb very clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this very early unboxed pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system. I am certain this record has been played lightly and has been carefully stored and handled. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove immensely difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
