Description
An unbelievable discovery, even to a veteran collector: two of the four discs are still sealed from 1959! This 4-disc stereo set (DGG Archiv/Archive SAPM 198625/8) of Bach's St. Matthew Passion is one of the greats of the gramophone, conducted by Karl Richter, with Ernst Haefliger, Kieth Engen, Irmgard Seefried and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
Made in Germany, this set dates from the first year of release, 8/1959, with the four discs in individual sleeves housed in a slipcase (all with red "STEREO" stickers). Records have the word "STEREO" in a box at the top of the label. It includes an index card and a text booklet.
As said, two of the four discs are still sealed from 1959! (Note photo: paper seals intact, plastic intact) The opened discs (both "pancake" as the sealed ones probably, are, too) were playgraded at NM, with a touch of surface noise in the first few seconds at the beginnings of sides 1 & 8 only (the records are in automatic sequence).
Slipcase is solid with a little browning, a VG+; individual sleeves (and inserts) are crisp and bright, NM.
This is the ultimate collector's copy--like time travel back to 1959 to shop for classical records. You won't find better than this.
