Santana start their career off in magnificent fashion with this excellent self-titled debut. The band's trademark mix of psychedelic hard rock with Latin rhythms is already fully-formed on this album, albeit with a slightly bluesier edge ("Persuasion", "You Just Don't Care") than is present on subsequent releases. Santana is also a slightly less diverse record than their magnum opus Abraxas, which perfected many of the ideas first introduced here, yet what this record lacks in variety it more than makes up for in virtuosic guitar playing. In fact, there's a higher density of memorable guitar solos here than on any other Santana album that I've heard (including the hard-rocking Santana III)- this was clearly Carlos Santana's band from the very beginning. Gregg Rolie's keyboards are another clear highlight, although with several big exceptions ("Waiting", "Treat") his instrumental contributions are far more supplementary than on Abraxas.

With phenomenal guitarwork abounding, it comes as little surprise that the highlights of Santana are instrumental tracks. The 6+ minute "Soul Sacrifice" closes the record with what is arguably its finest moment, although I'm also very fond of the opening "Waiting" and the somewhat brief "Savor"- a seamless extension of the previous "Shades of Time". Among the album's "straightforward" vocal tracks, my personal favorite is the aforementioned "Shades of Time'- where Carlos still manages to steal the show with some delicate playing between the Rolie-sung verses. The radio staple "Evil Ways" is another clear standout, anticipating the Latin-flavored hits of Abraxas ("Black Magic Woman", "Oye Como Va"). The only track that I'm not particularly fond of is "Persuasion", another Rolie-sung tune that seems to accomplish little instrumentally.

Not as essential as Abraxas, but still a great album that is at least on par with later LPs such as Santana III and Caravanserai. Strongly recommended to any fan of hard rock or psychedelic rock.

(c)           The record is  apparently pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

-         Cover has a tiny "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
