Fruko y sus Tesos is a salsa group from Colombia which enjoys immsense popularity throughout the Latin American world. It was formed in 1970 by Ernesto Fruko Estrada who modeled it after the New York salsa sound of the Fania All-Stars, one of the leading salsa groups at the time. A Favoutie of Salsa DJ's around the Globe. Canada's DJ Gury Gury has referred to Fruko y sus Tesos as Colombia's most important export.
Killer Latin work from Fruko -- one of the hippest cats ever to record for the Discos Fuentes label in Colombia -- and one of the company's few artists who could really rival the strength of the New York scene!

En Nueva York conoció el auge de la salsa y, de vuelta en Colombia, grabó el disco Tesura en 1970. De esta producción solamente se prensaron 400 discos. Se destacan los temas :Tesura, Botando Corriente, Improvisando y El Vidriero.
Ése fue el origen del nombre del grupo Fruko y sus Tesos; siendo "teso" sinónimo de "tieso", daba a entender que eran "los duros del barrio".
Al principio, Fruko no tuvo éxito, pero no se desanimó y siguió grabando y editando discos hasta que logró que el público demandase más canciones. Sus éxitos El Ausente, El Caminante, Manyoma y El Preso, fueron hits en Colombia y Estados Unidos. A mediados de la década de 1970, la música de Fruko y sus Tesos, con las voces de Edulfamid "Piper Pimienta" Diaz, Joe Arroyo y Wilson Saoko, era muy popular, no sólo en Colombia sino también en el resto de latinoamerica. Alcanzaron cierto éxito musical en los Estados Unidos, e incluso tocaron en el Madison Square Garden y lograron el premio de la revista Record World a la mejor orquesta de música tropical de América.

"Of the various songs off Colombia, the ones that grabbed me the most were by Fruko y sus Tesos. Fruko Y Sus Tesos translates into "Fruko and the Tough Guys" and are described by Beto as comparable to the Colombian equivalent of New York's Willie Colon (El Malo) in terms of projecting this kind of bad boy image except that while Colon did it with a sense of mafioso flair, Fruko looked like he was straight thuggin' it out. Compare:

Saying - Colon is slicked out but Fruko looks like he could kill you with a stare. (I love that Colon cover to death though).

This is an example of some of the LPs found in a Radio Station "shack". The covers recovering from several hurricanes (NOT THIS ONE)! but the records and label in excellent condition!!
