This listing is for a new copy of THE SHIRELLES - Happy And In Love Sealed USA Vinyl LP on the RCA label This is a Sealed Original copy with cut-out notch on the sleeve (see photo)

This item is one of a batch of SEALED ORIGINAL LPs from 1960's and 1970's from a warehouse find by one of our distributors of! These are original sealed copies of some juicy semi-obscurities!! Since we cannot see through the shrink-wrap to ensure perfection inside the record jackets after (in some cases) 55 years, we cannot take any opened copies back in return—sealed copies are fine—but once they’re opened, that’s it. The risk is minor, we believe, as these were all stored in an operational warehouse until we purchased them. They appear to be in excellent condition. Very few copies remaining on these gems, please act fast!

SHIRELLES "Happy And In Love" (RCA LSP-4581) (1971)  : One of the pioneering girl groups of the 60s, The Shirelles (originally Shirley Alston nee Owens, Doris Coley, Micki Harris and Beverly Lee) were the mainstay act at New York-based Scepter Records for a number of years, scoring hits with such classic songs as 'Will You Love Me Tomorrow' (considered the first No. 1 single by a girl group), 'Dedicated to the One I Love', 'Baby It's You' and 'Soldier Boy' (another No. 1 single).

In 1966, Coley left, and two years later, the group's tenure with Scepter ended with duelling lawsuits. But the group soldiered on; working with producer Randy Irwin and arranger George Andrews, the trio of Alston, Harris and Lee recorded for Blue Rock, Bell and United Artists over a three-year period before signing with RCA Records in 1971.

Melodic, orchestral Philly soul ruled black radio in the early ’70s, so that’s the mode the Shirelles are working in on this album, even if the arrangements aren’t quite as lush as that of their contemporaries allocated larger budgets. Only three of the tracks on "Happy and In Love" are original songs, with the rest of the album filled out with cover versions. Nevertheless, all of the material is beautifully chosen. Opening track (and lead single) 'No Sugar Tonight' elevates the Guess Who’s mid-tempo classic rock slog into an energetic slice of upbeat funk, replacing the original’s frustration and self-pity with triumphant liberation (“right on!”). No other track on  is quite that surprising, but many do make unexpected choices or dive into lesser-known material. Nearly as good is the mashed together medley of Jr. Walker’s 'Gotta Hold on to This Feeling' and Eddie Floyd’s 'I Never Found Me a Girl' (retitled 'I Never Found Me a Boy'). Two covers of Jerry Butler ballads — 'Strange, I Still Love You' and 'Go Away and Find  Yourself' — enhance the album’s soul bona fides. The ladies return to their roots with a cover of fellow girl group the Royalettes’ 1965 single 'It’s Gonna Take a Miracle,' and a tender, uptempo update of  their own 1961 hit 'Dedicated to the One I Love,' with Shirley Alston now handling the vocals instead of departed co-lead singer Doris Coley.
