ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This excellent LP from His Master's Voice (ALP 1595, English EMI pressing, red/gold label, mono, glossy laminated flipback jacket) features Mstislav Rostropovich's commanding and poetic account of Dvorak's Cello Concerto in B minor Op. 104, recorded at EMI Studio No. 1, Abbey Road, London in April 1957 with Sir Adrian Boult conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Wrote the critic T.H. in his review for the May 1961 issue of The Gramophone: "No praise can be too high for Rostropovich's performance of this concerto; not only for its actual playing, technically, but for the poetry, the true inwardness of his expressiveness. I said this at greater length when I wrote about the mono version, so I may perhaps be allowed now to say no more than that no performance I have ever heard has given me deeper enjoyment. I did complain, as far as the recording goes, that the woodwinds were often too reticent (and they have so much to say in this concerto that's important). It is still true of this stereo version. The clarinet at the start of the slow movement does now hold its melody on top of the rest but the balance between woodwind and soloist is still much the same. I could quote scores of instances but will mention only two; in the finale, at the first solo entry one can really hear only the string bass, the woodwind filling in the middle being almost inaudible and after bar 220 the flute and oboe, who should be in duet with the soloist, really scarcely tell at all. That apart, the general quality of sound is very good."
Incidentally, the fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, in English only, were written by J. McKay Martin, while the photo on the reverse side was taken by Derek Allen.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is slight bumping at corners, as well as the trace residue of a former sticker to the front panel, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings and the album remains perfectly solid, bright, glossy, and attractive (the laminate perfectly intact) – overall, a fine collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT++. Although the surfaces are not CD silent, in general the playback is superb. The labels are free of spindle trails and the vinyl retains a high gloss. I believe this copy has never, or at least seldom, been played. If you must have a flawless copy, however, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a truly excellent, virtually near-MINT, collector's copy.
