Quite an interesting copy this one - particularly if you're into the artistic aspect and connection with Warhol. At the outset of the initial print run there appear to have been a number of copies produced that were unlike any of the other 1st issue designs typical of the general retail release. As you are no doubt aware Warhol had been commissioned to do the artwork for SF and came up with the zip down jean and briefs shot in the interior. Nearly all 1st issue covers have the briefs slightly accessible in the interior by taking the zip down a bit. These copies are ubiquitous. What we have here appears to be an original proofing/promotional copy - revealing the interior fully as a gatefold. Some folks mention that only 200 of these ever entered the market place. I'm inclined - not to believe that figure. I think it's higher....but all the same I doubt there are that many still in existence. There is no way to retro fit a general retail release copy and return it to this state. Once the retail release copies were sealed up and shipped for sale - that was it. You would have to partially destroy the copy to get access like this. So, certainly an interesting artefact - and of one of the most famous cover designs in history. If you like things a little bit outside the "everyday general release copy" [the norm] - this could well be of interest.
Other than the fact the cover opens out to fully reveal the Warhol image and the interior workings of the zip - this cover and the items will all be precisely the same as any other 1st issue from '71. We have a 1st pressing LP 'Promotone' and 'Recording 1st pub' present on the labels - indicative of 1st issue '71. We also have the Richard Davis credit sheet and an original white inner with blue text. So, 100% genuine and 100% complete. And 'yes' the zip is in full working order.

Vinyl (Vg+) In excellent order having only seen light use. I'm picking out a couple of light marks - but nothing heavy or troublesome. Plays very well indeed. I'm going to give it the full works on the weekend when I have time - but from a brief audition... I'm going with VG+, as a minimum, just some light background noticeable occasionally in the quietest moments. Maybe a couple of isolated ticks in one brief spot per side. Under full testing I expect to be able to bring this grading upward. Anyone familiar with this title will know that decent 1st pressings manage to deliver a lot of that raw energy that was present at the time of recording. It also contains passages that are very lowkey on side 2 - so anything that's been abused is not going to pass the audition. A cracking little player - I hope to bring more detail to the listing at the weekend.
Cover (Vg+) Not quite up to the standard of the vinyl, but very respectable all the same. And let's not loose sight of the fact - this isn't just a standard 1st issue cover. Expect some light tanning - so the white areas will be showing this. And - to be fair - finding a proper white 1st issue is quite a tricky find in itself. I'll start with the front - that zip doesn't appear to have tarnished and is in good working order [important]. The rear doesn't seem to be exhibiting much of the usual zip damage from being stacked heavy on a shelf against another SF copy [in the shops]. Is this a sign this example was never sold through a retail outlet...possibly? Overall not too much wear, or on the edges. Slight bump to one of the bottom corners. Now turning to the interior. The zip mechanism looks fine and all attached well. Note on the right side [on the briefs!] you can see slight residue leftover from the zip. Overall a really nice example and certainly one I've never had the pleasure of seeing up close.
Inner (Vg+) Aged a little. NO splits.
Insert (Vg+) Light ageing. Quite respectable though.
