THE ROLLING STONES – THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST – TXL 103 – MONO
Earliest UK 1967 TRUE MONO 1P/P1 1st pressing AND 1st print 'DEEP BLUE' thick card 3D sleeve
This is the FIRST EVER MONO PRESSING of this album released in TRUE MONO, not the 'folded-down-from-stereo' mono that soon replaced it. And this is the FIRST EVER PRINT RUN of the sleeve with the 'DEEP BLUE' sky/swirly smoke front. The earliest sleeve (like this one) were printed to look vibrant, the sky on the front is deep blue compared to the pale turquoise on later ones, and the colours on the back and inside are also deeper and richer. Soon after release, the printing company (Robert Stace) seems to have economised on the use of ink - SEE THE PHOTO FOR COMPARISON: on the left is the one for sale here, the one on the right is also a 3D mono sleeve but printed a year or two later in 1968/69.

A note on my approach to selling records: Listings of records on eBay often fall short on detail both visually and descriptively, which can lead to disappointment. I take revealing photos, sometimes in harsh light, so that you can actually see what you’ll get. I also describe honestly what you’ll hear. Sleeve: EX
Excellent 'Deep Blue' 1st print sleeve - SEE THE COMPARISON PHOTO. Nice and solid, made with thick card, completely intact, and very clean all sides. The 3D photo is firmly in place, and apart from a few fine surface lines and signs of wear it looks excellent. The laminate has retained its sheen, there is almost no wear from rubbing, and no ring wear to speak of. There are no creases on the front and back surfaces, just two or three very short light creases on both sides along the spine, but these are barely visible apart from just one. There is some light patchy wear along the edges top and bottom, but this is only noticeable if you look down on the edges. There is also some minor corner wear. Otherwise, the opening edge is in very good condition, and there is no laminate lift, no seam splits, no stickers or writing, and the spine is in really nice fully legible condition from end to end - see the photos.Inner sleeve: EX
The vibrant red original swirly inner sleeve is in great condition, flat and smooth, still square with no corner wear or edge wear, no seam splits, and just some very minor light creasing - hard to find in this condition.

There are a few spindle marks, but these are not extensive - see photos. The labels are in lovely condition.
Vinyl-visual: VG
The Record Collector definition of 'Very Good' (see below) accurately sums up the visual and aural condition of the record. The vinyl retains its sheen and is completely clean (no fingerprints), its just that there are quite a few light surface marks and lines on both sides - more so on Side 2. However, they are ALL superficial, and NONE of them are obviously audible during playback. There are NO scratches, and NO skips or jumps or sticking. The close up photo shows a few surface lines on Side 2 (highlighted in harsh artificial light - they are far less obvious in natural light).
Vinyl-aural: VG
The whole record plays through well from beginning to end - punchy, powerful and clear! In keeping with the visual condition of the record, there is some surface noise/light crackling between some tracks and in some quiet parts, more so on Side 2. But there are NO scratches, skips, jumps or sticking. And there is NO distortion (apart from a few seconds of what might (?) be distortion during 'In Another Land', but it's hard to say whether it is the recording itself or the record!). And there is almost none of the usual static or crackle along the run-in grooves before the first track on either side. Overall, there is nothing that interferes with play, and very little that interferes with enjoyment.
GRADING:
I follow RECORD COLLECTOR guidelines, and use Good (G or G+), Very Good (VG or VG+), Excellent (EX or EX+), and Near Mint or Mint. The majority of the records I sell range from VG+ to Near Mint, and come from my collection of over 1,500 albums and singles. I listen to them on a Rega Planar 3 turntable.
MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
(FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced).
