Description
Niki Sullivan and Gene Evans teamed up in 1962 and with Larry Holley's help recorded there one and only release as The Hollyhawks. Released on the Jubilee label number 5441 I always thought that Niki and Gene sang too well to team up but they did and this hing should have at the very least made them "one hit wonders" but no such luck. Everyone I ran with in Lubbock back in the day said Gene sounded like Roy Orbison and Niki sounded like Buddy Holly. My opinion is okay! Good! Nothing wrong with that in my opinion. To this day I think it should have been a hit and catapulted both of them into the stratosphere where all good west Texas musicians reside. Then maybe we wouldn't be subject today to "music" that no one can even hum the melody. That's because there isn't one. I knew both Gene and Niki well. Gene and I went to Lubbock High School and both graduated in 1960. We were friends. I met Niki after I graduated from Lubbock High and was working at the Lubbock National Bank and Niki was working at a paint store up on Avenue Q. We'd sneak off of work early and walk over to the Lindsay Theater and watch a matinee. At that time he was fed up with the "business of music" and I was just fed up. As I recall I went to the southeast Asia war games and Niki went to California. Doesn't stop this from being a great record though!
