"Bury the rag deep in your face, now is the time for your tears.." Imagine the blues when you discover this. An incredible hastobenearmint ultra rare copy of "Love in Vain" Vocallion cracked. You can see the crack across the whole record, which has been repaired. I can';t judge the quality of the repair, because I can't play it, but it looks good, and I'm going to assume it didn't make it any more playable. (I realize, like the legendary copy of "Stormy Weather" by the Five Sharps, technicians can restore the sound to some degree. Or at least restore a copy of the sound, but this is probably something you wouldn't want to play more than once, and there ARE excellent copies from several restorations of originals.)
That said, this would make a killer display piece for a blues club (a double dose of the blues, you might say) or in your collection room on the wall framed by a pro.. It's still the rarest (I believe) Johnson 78, and it is absoltively, positutely authentic.
I have no idea of the actual value of a cracked copy, so I am starting it at $750. From reliable sources, I understand an uncracked one would be worth at least $10,000. (I'm having horribe visions of Bonomo's Turkish taffy "Smack it & Crack it!", the scourge of dentists everywhere.) Needless to say, packing will be obsessively careful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sidenote: I recently came across on the internet, the 29 songs/41 takes slowed down 20% (allegedly some 78s were speeded up), and I have to say they sound more like I would have imagined. Check it out!
