This is the ultra rare Roba Stanley OKEH 78 RPM recording of 'Old Maid Blues', backed with 'The Kicking Mule 'by Ernest V. Stoneman, himself an early legend of country music. Roba recorded this side in her last recording session in July 1925 in Atlanta, GA, per the record label, where she also recorded 'Single Life'. As a bonus, again per the label, her guitar and harmonica accompaniest on this recording was none other than Henry Whitter, who is pretty big time himself.The best I can make from my research on her is that she only recorded 9 sides total, 4 in July, 1924 and 3 more in December of the same year, with her last session 6 months later yielding her only 2 solos. Her other 7 sides were with either the Stanley Trio, with her dad, Bob Stanley who is a legendary fiddle player in his own right, or Bill Patterson. According to Eugene Chadbourne in his biography of her on Allmusic, she was arguably the first woman to record country music solo. Other say it was Samantha Bumgarner and Eva Davis 3 months earlier, but they actually worked together, so you decide for yourself. Be that as it may, this is an extremely rare and hard to find record, if you can even find another one for sale, which I cannot. I cannot even find where another one has sold on Ebay. With her making only 9 total sides and 2 solos before she married, moved to Florida and stopped recording forever, you can imagine how hard these are to find. It is stated in several places that Roba was listed as being 16 years old when she first recorded in 1924, but since then, records have surfaced that place her being born in 1910, making her actuallyy only 14 when she firsr recorded amd 15 when she made this record.I have also posted a public domain picture of young Roba so you can see what she looked like around the time of this recording.
