Description

The overview of this Richard Strauss Opera Lot is fairly straightforward. Two of the top three pictured (“Daphne” & “Guntram”) are European marketed editions that don't usually wash up on U.S. shores. Well-recorded and performed. (The Holland pressing of “Guntram” is one of the best sounding CBS/Columbia “Masterworks” that I've ever heard.)

Pictured and listed in the middle, the 1963 DGG recording of “Die Frau Ohne Schatten”, is hard to find with vinyl in a NM state, although the box set container has seen better days.

The last three London/Decca recordings are certainly plentiful enough. But being common, doesn't mean they run-of-the mill. The London penchant for an excellent, balanced mix between orchestras and singers is evident in all three.

Each opera in this set has been auditioned from start to finish. The entire 18 LP collection is free of scratches and damage. The all play quietly and merit a NM grading.

Hungarian State Orchestra - Directed by Eve Queler

CBS Masterworks – Digital – 12M 39737

Pressed in Holland/CBS – 1985

Back of box set cover has a two, 1.5” splits. Otherwise, full intergrity with a lustrous, as-new, front graphic. Records and enclosed booklet in NM condition.

Die Frau Ohne Schatten (The Woman Without a Shadow)

Opera in Three Acts – written by Hugo von Hofmannsthal

Inge Borkh, Ingrid Bjoner, Martha Modl, Jess Thomas, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau & Joseph Keilberth.

Chorus of the Bavarian State Opera – Wolfgang Baumgart, chorus master. Orchestra of the Bavarian State Opera – Joseph Keilberth, conducting.

Recorded at a special performance celebrating the re-opening of the Munich National Theatre – Nov. 21, 1963.

Deutsche Grammophon Gessellschaft (Tulip) 138 911A – Germany - 4 LPs

The 52-old records a clean, lustrous black and play NM.

Back box set cover has brown scoffs (Picture #9). One corner of the front cover is split.

The spine is beginning to separate from the box (Picture #10). That said, front cover graphic is still in excellent shape.

Contains both production notes and a classic, booklet-style libretto.

Salome – A One Act Opera – Based on the Poem by Oscar Wilde

Birgit Nilsson, Eberhard Wachter, Gerhard Stolze, Grace Hoffman.

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra – Georg Solti, conducting.

Recoded at the Sofiensaal, Vienna – 1962

London - OSA 1218 – Pressed in the UK – 2 LPs

Another 50 something pressing the plays clean and quiet. NM

There is minimal wear loss to the front graphic. The paper that attaches the back to front box set cover has come undone so that they are now two pieces (Picture #11). Nevertheless, the box cover still maintains its integrity.

The London/Decca stock libretto has gone missing. In its stead, I have enclosed a MET libretto for Salome (German to English) along with this box set.

Elektra – A One Act Opera

Birgit Nilsson – soprano

Regina Resnik – mezzo soprano

Gerhard Stolze - tenor

Marie Collier – soprano

Tom Krause – baritone

Vienna State Opera Chorus, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

Conducted by Georg Solti

Recoded at the Sofiensaal, Vienna – 1967

London - OSA 1269 – Pressed in the UK – 2 LPs

The two LPs in this opera set appear lustrous and play clean and quiet. The box set front cover shows minimal wear, although the corners are beginning to show wear with one split.

The Production notes/libretto has the previous owner's name rubber-stamped in two places on the title page - not obnoxiously large (Picture #12).

Die Agyptische Helena (The Egyptian Helen) – Opera in Two Acts

Gwyneth Jones, Matti Kastu, Barbara Hendricks, Dinah Bryant, Willard White.

The Kenneth Jewell Chorale

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra - Antal Dorati, conducting

Recorded at United Artist Theater in Detroit – Kenneth Wilkinson, Engineer

London - OSA 13135 – Pressed in UK – 1979 – 3 LPs

The three LPs in this opera set appear lustrous and play clean and quiet.

The box set front cover shows minimal wear along the edges of the front cover graphic.
