Mid Century Modern Furniture in Australia

In the 1950's Danish Modern ‘style’ was embraced by Australian furniture manufacturing companies, who developed their own solid timber furniture. In this period grew some of Australia's most recognised furniture designers ie; Fred Lowen, furniture designer and founding partner of FLER Furniture and TESSA. Grant Featherston who designed the famous Contour chair and was consultant to companies such as Module and Aristoc. The Adelaide firm TH Brown & Sons also released arrange of quality hand crafted furniture in the 1960's made from moulded timber with natural oil finishes. Other furniture companies formed including Parker, Danish Deluxe, Chiswell, Noblett, Malmo, Moderntone and Burgess all having there own designers. Timbers used were mainly Teak and Tasmanian Blackwood, other timbers used included, Tasmanian Myrtle, Tasmanian Oak, Maple and Kauri.
