Description

It's always a problem grading these lovely old SKA records.

They went to lots of parties.

That means that they're a bit battered and that's why many have names written on the label.

HOWEVER... they're usually cut VERY LOUD and though they look a bit rough, they sound OK (especially if you press the "Mono" button).

This means that a 60's Ska goodie can be perfectly acceptable, even if it looks R.A.A.B.B. (Rough As A Bear's Bottom)..

Please bear that in mind when reading my descriptions.

Here we have Bobby Aitken and the Carib Beats with a fine 1967 Reggae/Rocksteady outing on the prestigious Doctor Bird label, number DB1977.

The tunes are Sweets For My Sweet (The Pomus & Shuman song performed splendidly by Liverpool lads The Searchers and even more splendidly, with latin-style drum rolls by The Drifters) and How Sweet It His (as it says on the label) which is NOT the Junior Walker song, .

Both sides are a bit scruffy, to be honest, but they play through OK and give pleasure to the ear'ole especially with the mono button pressed. There is an occasional click, but nothing lethal.

There is a circular (storage?) mark around the rim of the record. It doesn't cause a problem and I'm not sure why it's there.

Let's call it just about a VG (stronger on "Sweets" side) but sounding MUCH BETTER.

Both tunes are excellent floor-fillers especially "Sweets For My Sweet". Bobby has obviously heard the song, once, probably at a noisy party. However he has only remembered some of the words. He sings them in an order that Pomus and Shuman would find surprising, with numerous repetitions of the bit about the bright star shining. This all adds to the charm, and the rhythm section are chugging along like demons.

The "Sweets For My Sweet" side is the cleanest one, and would fill the floor at any skinhead's shebeen, wake, wedding, gender-reveal or coming-out-party.

I am not a dealer.

I am just a very old bloke thinning out his lifetime collection of STUFF before the floor collapses (or I do).

I'm selling most of this stuff for much less

than I paid for it.

What a great business plan (I don't think)!

I am certainly NOT INTERESTED IN PROFIT..

..and indeed, seldom make any!

What little profit I do make goes to help

a very splendid Wildlife Rescue Charity.

The item in the photograph is the item you will get.

I have described everything to the best of my ability, and it looks in ok condition to me.

Please check the photographs to decide for yourself.

NO OVERSEAS bidders please.

And NO OVERSEAS bidders using UK addresses please.

I am a simple sort, and I want my buyers to be happy. If there is any kind of problem, I like to sort it out personally. I can’t do this if you’re thousands of miles away!
