Description

Rare Vintage Mint Original Vinyl Album, The GTO’s, Permanent Damage...

The album is available as pictured, in perfect new condition with intact cellophane

and no promo punch. This is from the original pressing and not a reissue, released

in April of 1969.

“The G.T.O.’s write all their own lyrics & no subject matter covered by these

lyrics was suggested by any outside source. The choice of subjects is a

reflection of the girls’ own attitudes toward their environment. The G.T.O.’s

hope you like their album.”

 — Frank Zappa

In the late sixties, the music business, and the cultural revolution taking place at

that time, all centered on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. Then, all the bands

that came to town would stay around there, at the Chateau Marmont or the Sunset

Hyatt House. Many of them would play at clubs in the area, including The Whiskey

a Go Go, Gazzarri’s, The Roxy, Thee Experience, PJ’s/Starwood, (just down

Crescent Heights on Santa Monica Blvd.) The Troubadour and Pandora’s Box (also

on Santa Monica), and further east on Sunset in Hollywood, The Aquarius Theater.

Frank Zappa lived just around the corner from the Strip, in a log cabin (that used to

belong to Tom Mix) just north on Laurel Canyon. Rodney Bingenheimer, the unofficial

Mayor of the Sunset Strip (see Mayor of the Sunset Strip on Netflix and elsewhere).

Rodney was prominent and well-known in that scene, and he had connections to

everyone of consequence (most of the major labels had a presence on The Strip),

and would aid in the careers of countless musicians and bands. He would later open

Rodney’s English Disco and would host (and discover) many of the cutting edge

bands as they emerged, and often before, starting countless careeers.

One of those (many) bands was The GTOs (Girls Together Outrageously). They

were a girl group (in the parlance of the times) from around the Los Angeles area,

and they were better than most. Only active for two and a half years (1968-1970)

with a single reunion in 1974, their one album, Permanent Damage, produced by

Zappa, was released in 1969. Rodney championed them, as did Captain Beefheart,

and they achieved some success.

Wikipedia has an excellent overview of the album (including a track-by-track

description) as well as the band, with bios of its members, to be found here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_GTOs

I first became aware of the GTO’s while editing my newspaper, The LA Image, in

1969 (Rodney wrote a column for us). At that time, Frank Zappa’s record company,

Straight Records, was promoting the band, and i got a promo copy of Permanent

Damage in the mail. This record was part of an avalanche of new albums that came

across our transom every week, but there was something alluring about it, so we

played it, and reviewed it, and liked it. One thing led to another, and we soon set it up

with Herb Cohen at Straight to host a ‘Win a Dream Date with a GTO’ contest. As

runner-up prizes, we got a bunch of albums, of which this copy is one of the few left.

Included with the record is one of my few remaining copies of The Image that featured

the contest. Sadly, we ceased regular publication before the winner could be

selected – i would have been pleased if it had been me...

(A quick note: the inside liner notes were taken off the internet and the second

set has been enhanced -- as well as the back cover -- in an attempt to make

them readable – i really like their poesy, but i was not about to open the album

to scan them properly.)

And now, back to the auction in progress...
