LOT DESCRIPTION
Original Hollywood CA radio promo pressing of David Bowie's 1972 single Starman / Suffragette City, catalogue number 74-0719 (mono).
BIOGRAPHY
RCA's Hollywood, CA pressing plant had opened in 1928. The plant occupied a full city block and RCA had included pressing, assembly, manufacturing and distribution offices plus several recording studios. Recording ceased around 1947 but the pressing and distribution hub continued operating until 1976, when the plant burned to the ground giving music artifacts such as this that bit more legacy and rarity.
On Friday February 4th 1972 Bowie headed up the Ziggy Stardust LP recording sessions at Trident Studios, London. That day under the direction of producer Ken Scott, Bowie and the band recorded Starman, Suffragette City and Rock 'N' Roll Suicide.
In a 2009 interview Ken Scott was asked about Starman "....Mick Ronson did the arrangements for strings and guitar. That Morse Code sound is actually a piano and two guitars, an octave apart, then we bounced them all down to make one track. It seemed to make sense in that there was this idea of something coming from another planet. So we then put it all through a phaser. There are two versions of Starman – one a loud Morse code version and one a quiet version. And I only remember doing one mix of it, and I can’t tell you which one I did. I’ve no idea where the second came from..."
Starman was subsequently released in the UK on April 28th 1972 (RCA 2199) and in August that year in the USA (74-0719).
This Starman US promotional single from 1972 was circulated by RCA to radio stations to promote the then forthcoming Starman single in the US - in addition to promoting Bowie's forthcoming new album, The Rise and Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars.
This US promo single still has the original WRXT 93FM Chicago station identity stuck on the rear of the RCA bag.

The vinyl single still rates Good + plays through but with some obvious signs of use during its more glamourous days as an original Bowie radio promo. Both RCA labels however are extremely original and clean with no handwriting or graffiti. Checkout the large photographs provided.
The original RCA die cut promo bag and WRXT sticker are showing signs of age with plenty of surface creases and some obvious discoloration and curing. But no nasty tears or rips and no handwriting. All in all a really unusual and original piece of Ziggy Stardust music history,
