This Listing is for what we understand to be one of the Rarest of Jazz Records. and GRADED an E+. This is a Charlie and his Orchestra 78 rpm record: has just a small stamp name on the bottom of label on one side saying B Feldman & Co Shaftesbury av on the #0156 and Berlin London Paris Francis Day on the side with #0157. Side with #0156 has the cut of Blue Skies Are Around The Corner and the #0157 side has the cut of Japanese Sandman.
Charlie (Karl Schwedler) and his Orchestra was a jazz group which specifically aimed to demoralize the British and American Allied Forces during World War II. Charlie and his Orchestra (also referred to as the "Templin band" and "Bruno and His Swinging Tigers") were a third reich sponsored German propaganda swing band. Jazz music styles were seen by their authorities as rebellious, but ironically propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels conceived the idea of using the style in radio broadcasts aimed at the American and particularly the United Kingdom troops. The purpose of the band was to stir pro-third reich sympathy, draw attention to Allied losses, convince listeners that Great Britain was a pawn for American and Jewish interests, and carry the German dictator's messages in an entertaining form. The songs stressed how badly the war was going for the target audience, and how it was only going to be a matter of time before they would be beaten. Led by German accented frontman Karl Schwedler ("Charlie"), conducted by Lutz Templin, and paced by drummer Fritz Brocksieper, the band included Kurt Abraham on reeds and Willy Berking on trombone. The group formed in 1940, making over 90 recordings between March 1941 and February 1943. Arrangements were by Templin, Willy Berking, and Franz Muck, with lyrics written by the Propagandaministerium.
It is our understanding that there were about 250 of these records recorded and only 50 to 100 pressed of each recording. Also read that these were sent only to German radio stations and to Prisoner Of War POW camps for broadcast, and most of these were destroyed when the war was coming to an end.
Also rumored that there was a period during WWII that anyone in possession of these records was ordered by the SS to be shot on site.
Ok, with all that said: This make for one of the rarest and hardest to find 78 rpm Jazz records to be offered by our seller. And to make it even more of a rarity, we are putting a GRADE of E+. on it.
