Rare 1970 Canadian Psych Rock 45 Record Excelsior Paragon Montreal The Sound Box
Ultra Rare 1970 Canadian Psych Rock 45 Record Excelsior Montreal The Sound Box
This is a next to impossible to find 45 record released in early 1970 by Montreal rock group Excelsior, formed by former members of Montreal’s West Island “The Red Cats” and “Brian Redmond and The Sound Box”, and I believe referred to briefly as “The Magnificent Excelsior”. It’s difficult to find much out about this group other than an old Montreal Gazette review of the record dating to March 14, 1970 that you can find online. The group was formed in June of 1969 and was comprised of John Farley on guitar, Kevin Pike on drums, Bud Swan on bass, Ron Hepworth on organ and Jim Boyce on vocals. The review was very positive, stating that “both sides are hard, heavy rock and don’t make much concession to commercialism” and compares the group to Cream, and although I don’t really see a resemblance, however, the music is Hammond B3 heavy and sounds great, even a little ahead of the heavy metal sound that was emerging. I wish that I could supply a sound sample, but trust me that this is quality music. The only other knowledge that I have of the group is that John Farley was a friend of a guitarist friend of mine and went on to become a well regarded jazz guitarist. The record was produced by ex-Sceptres member Ron Von Dykoff (aka Ron Dykhof) for the Sheldon Kagan Agency, a local Montreal impresario. It was released on the Paragon label. The record is a strong VG+. There are visible light scratches, but I’ve played the record and the musical presence is very strong so you don’t hear any defects, except during first seconds of side A “Behind the Door” where you might hear one or two ticks depending on your turntable. “Feeling Restless” is on side B and is a medium tempo rock song. This is a great addition to a Canadian rock music collection, very rare......please check my other auction for the Excelsior follow-up single on Polydor titled “Cherry Wine”....

I am now shipping to my US clients through USPS services. I am located in Canada but I now have a carrier service to bring my parcels directly across the border on Wednesdays to be shipped out of the USPS postal outlet in Champlain, N.Y. In addition to the actual shipping cost, I do charge a $3.00 handling fee to help offset the cost of this special US service. Please note that even with the handling fee that it is less expensive and is a quicker service than using Canada Post.
If you wish your item to be shipped by USPS in the same week, I would require your paypal payment by Tuesday at 5:00 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.
PLEASE NOTE: For items which sell over $200.00, I must ship to my U.S. clients using Canada Post, this is due to customs regulations.
To my Canadian clients, I use Canada Post for shipping, as I am based in Canada - legally, I am not permitted to ship to you through the US, so do not rely on the US shipping calculator for costs.
To my International clients I can ship by either Canada Post or by USPS (in order to use USPS for intl. clients - the items must sell for under $200.00).
Please feel free to write with any inquiries in regards to cost of shipping to you.
I would request any client to get in touch with me upon winning an item, who is NOT able to pay by Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, so I can get an idea of when to expect your payment.
My regular shipping day is Wednesday.
