Description
Rare 4" 78rpm die cut cardboard picture disk for children: I Am A Dancing Girl / Learning To Dance by James Edmiston and A. E. Johnstone. Manufactured by the Talking Book Corporation of 358 Fifth Avenue New York City, dated 1918 on reverse.
Please examine the pictures to assess condition. The record surface looks to be in very good condition; I have not played the disk but assume it to be a recording of the song notated on the back. The shellac is coming away from the cardboard on one side (if the board is gently bent) but generally it seems to be still well adhered. There are four creases in the board: one across the girl's neck and three on her legs/feet, of which one is fairly light; these are seen best from the reverse side. To the front there are three edges where the cardboard has been rubbed – by both her hands, and on the bow in her hair. There is some marking around the hole on the reverse and darkening of the card at the head and feet. Otherwise, for a children's record dating from the end of the First World War, both the disk and cardboard are in very good condition.
This is one of a series of children's picture disks produced by Victor Hugo Emerson, formerly chief recording engineer of Columbia records, latterly of the Emerson Phonograph Company.
The item will be securely packed between two pieces of hardboard.
