THIS IS the album where it all came together for Rush. Their self titled debut proved that they could ape Led Zep ably enough and 'Caress Of Steel' showed surprising experimentation but 'Fly By Night' combined the two styles into one steller statement. 'Anthem' the lead track sets the scene with its furious hard rock riffery, deep lyrical content and geddy lee's amazing and unique vocal delivery. It was if Led Zeppelin had conspired to secretely record with Genesis and then release this album as Rush.
Brilliantly constructed and expertly performed, the style is both urgent and yet sophisticated, cleanly produced (by Terry Brown) and exploding with originality. The center piece of the album is undoutedly 'By Tor & The Snow Dog' an improbable progressive rock nine minute epic that tugs at every cliche in the book yet manages to stay fresh and urgent with Alex Lifeson's guitar work shining particularly bright. By contrast 'Rivendell' is an accoustic composition built mainly on classical guitar and Geddy Lee's plaintiff vocal. It's a fitting precursor to 'In The End' another majestic epic (this one lasting seven minutes) which developes into a triumphant call to arms.
So hard to find UK originals with the wonderful fully laminated cover. This one's a beaut and comes with the oft missing lyric insert.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
