Ansermet - THE ROYAL BALLET, Gala Performances - Rca LDS-6065 - Classic Heavy Vinyl Audiophile Edition (2LP Gate) - TAS - VERY BEST!

There are but few record sets in the classical repertoire as vaulted as this one.

In its original incarnation, the Soria box can command a thousand dollars, perhaps more, the sound within of a special kind, Ansermet at his best, the music as beautiful as can be, captured very well indeed.

That said, though this set before you, the Classic re-issue, will never be as worthy a collectible as the original, it must also be said that it surely surpasses it sonically.

If you are fortunate enough to own an original, compare it to this, then listen for the slight upward lifting of the sound, as if the high end is suddenly all there, breathing, the sense of it, if you will, as if the orchestra's hat has been entirely taken off.

A prize indeed, that, yes, came to me after I had perused a 3000 record strong collection, of an audiophile husband who had recently passed away.

When I was finished perusing all of the collection, the woman by my side, the other half, said, "My husband has a few more records upstairs. Would you like to see them?"

Of course I said yes, and we went upstairs, where she opened the husband's walk-in closet for me to find twelve very special records. There, stored on the upper shelf, this Ansermet among them.

I stood there a moment, I did, a certain respect given, me awash with this man, his music, his glory, somewhere in a listening chair.

It was a kind moment...humbling.

So, yes, if you were to ask me if this set is near mint, let me just plainly say:

It is far, far better, and much, much more.
