STONED SOUL PICNIC - ATLANTIC RECORDS RHINO RECORDS PRESSING SD 1514

Those who grew up in the '70s and '80s grooved to vibraphonist Roy Ayers's funky hits "Freaky Deaky" and "Running Away," and modern hip-hop groups like The Roots sampled Ayers's riffs and exposed him to an even younger crowd. This 1968 reissue features Herbie Hancock, flutist Hubert Laws, alto saxophonist Gary Bartz, drummer Grady Tate, bassists Ron Carter, and Miroslav Vitous and Charles Tolliver on trumpet and flügelhorn, highlighting Ayers's forgotten roots as a jazz fusion artist. Throughout the record, the Los Angeles-born vibraphonist assimilates the styles of Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson, and Bobby Hutcherson into an accessible, genre-crossing style. Ayers's "A Rose for Cindy" opens with a spooky, atonal collage and resolves into pensive midtempo tune. Antonio Carlos Jobim's bossa nova-breezed "Wave" and the Stevie Wonder hit "For Once in My Life" shimmer with Tolliver's horn arrangements. The trumpeter's Latin-tinged "Lil's Paradise," the intriguing "What the People Say," and the title track still groove and sound contemporary.

Tracks include: 1. Rose for Cindy 2. Stoned Soul Picnic 3. Wave 4. For Once in My Life 5. Lil's Paradise 6. What the People Say

COFFY SOUNDTRACK - 180 GRAM POLYDOR RECORDS PD 5048

The film that gave Pam Grier her first leading role and vaulted her to queen bee of the blackploitation movement also inspired a soundtrack that is arguably Roy Ayers's most rewarding work. Grier plays a disgruntled nurse who goes "underground" to exact revenge on the pusher men who put the monkey on her junkie sister's back. Ayers matches her step for gun-totin' step with crisp, percolating drum lines; colorful ripples of electric piano; and his signature, lissome vibe work. Ayers' twin talents--the head-scratching virtuosity of his jazz runs and the ass-shaking grooves of his R&B rhythms--are in full flower on this recording. But Coffy is more than an acid-jazz archetype. The classically inspired solo harpsichord piece and the wack auxiliary percussion freak-out also included here hint at a deeper pool of inspiration

Vibrations LP - POLYDOR RECORDS PD-1-6091

In the digging world, is there a more solid musical catalog than that of Roy Ayers Ubiquity? The catalog starts strong with the iconic He's Coming and ends strong with the equally iconic Lifeline. There's no late seventies fizzle like other decade spanning artists, and everything in between seems to be a digger's staple. 1976's Vibrations is Ubiquity's penultimate album. What always impressed me about this particular album is the diversity of musical styles from track to track. I haven't listened to this in a couple years, and I'm taken back by its unusual flow. Yeah, we all know about the Pete Rock-sampled "Searchin(1)," but followed by the hard funk of "One Sweet Love To Remember(2)"; the breezy title track(3) (almost like a sequel to "Everybody Love's The Sunshine"); the spastic boogie of "Moving, Grooving(4)"; to the hard midtempo drums of "Baby You Give Me A Feeling(5)"... it becomes an inseparable part of the bigger picture. You'll find the theme on the equally strong A-side, check "Domelo(6), Baby I Need Your Love(7)" and "Higher(8)" for a taste. Always loved the grainy cover photography too. 11 tracks in all, recommended.
