Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces tiny, very few and faint. This superb record appears hardly played.

Brief Info: The classic third album from this art-glam-rock band that now featuring new member Eddie Jobson, who replaced Brian Eno, formerly of Curved Air and later many other well-known bands including King Crimson, UK, Jethro Tull and Frank Zappa’s band. Many consider this to be their very best set and features another stunning, beautiful gatefold cover – this time the girl is Marilyn Cole, a then girlfriend of Bryan Ferry who famously became ‘Playboy’ magazines first full-front nude centrefold. A superb mix of progressive rock, art-rock and popular music, it features the classic hit single ‘Street Life’. Not the rarest album I have ever offered, but never easy with such a lovely, unaged cover and clean and well-pressed record. One of the Island 1970s classic bands and albums.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR MINT: a fully laminated gatefold format. Printed and made in England, includes the blue ‘22 st peter’s square’ address inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front, Back & Centrefold: One of the most iconic covers of the 1970s, this one does it maximum justice. Cover-protected from new by one owner – the difference is immediately apparent when seen for real. All faces on this gorgeous cover are almost as issued with barely anything of note to fault. Incredibly shiny, clear and fresh surfaces with hardly a crease or dulling trace to be seen. The centrefold hinge still fully laminated with barely any cracking and no peeling. The front cover when fully opened simply looks sensational as I hope my pictures show, any blemishes bordering on minuscule, this is one to hold and admire.

Top & Bottom Edges: All four straight, shiny, smooth and unscuffed, all lie flat and flush.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, msotly sharp with hardly any thickening. The front has a real tucked and folded edge that is unworn bar a tiny laminate chip on the corner with no affect on the card or its surface. Record enters on the back.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with no compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The text is unworn under the solid and intact laminate, no light fading, a fine natural central hairline crease from opening is nigh-on impossible toa void. This area more than matches the other superb areas.

Corners: Again all in fantastic condition with beautiful crisp sharp shape retained without knocks.

Cover Summary: A truly beautiful piece of cover-art, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the soft-lined blue Island inner is equally superb, clean and fresh with lovely colour retained. These often darken and fade over time, but I doubt if this has hardly ever left the main cover. This has the ‘22 st peter’s square’ address text and still clear and solid. The paper hardly creased with all edges naturally intact. These inners are seldom seen much better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR MINT: a superb visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces minuscule and faint as seen under bright light. Visually a beautiful record that I am sure has hardly even been handled, let alone played. This should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic album plays up to it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal and this is an exceptional clean copy with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very little and has been very carefully stored and handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
