Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive with only light / light+ spindle marks. This from the collection of barely played records, a few more spindle marks than most from this lot but still only light for a very popular album. These only show under angled light.

Cat Number: ILPS 9232.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: Moderate but the earlier pressed examples in top conditions are far harder, this being one of heaviest pressings I have ever had too.

Brief Info: A brilliant second album with an equally stunning cover, for me one of the greatest of this decade. This was far more ‘progressive’ than glam-rock and nothing like as commercial as the later titles. This was Roxy Music with Eno and his treatments of the conventional instruments gave them a very interesting sound which was developed still further on this album. For Your Pleasure is my personal favourite Roxy album and far less commercial than the post-Eno era. Sadly he left the band for a solo career after this title and their sound became more conventional but still superb up to Siren. Their first and second records were more experimental and it works to perfection. Two brilliant tracks stand out: the huge rocking opener, ‘Do the Strand’ with its wailing saxophone riffs and ‘In Every Dream Home a Heartache’ where Ferry sings about his mail-order lover, an inflatable doll that totally blows his mind. You can hardly imagine this iconic vocalist singing about such subjects on the later albums can you? Island got the packaging right as well and even fully laminated this classic cover, not something they did often. I have often found this album a bit of a ‘crackler’; surface sound within the pressing is quite common but this example plays beautifully from the heavier-than-usual record and has nothing unwanted. For those who only know the post-Siren Roxy, well the early albums are little different, far more ‘progressive’ and hugely exciting, sophisticated and brilliant.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Moderate. One of the few Island full laminates.

Cover Grade and Format: Critically graded EX++, but Mint(-) is a temptation. A fully laminated gatefold format, printed and made in England.

Lamination – Front & Back: Lovely fresh and clean laminate that retains a lovely rich shine and beautiful clarity. Very little traces of any dulling or friction rubs and with just the odd tiny light mark or two (but look very hard). Even under light, barely any hairlines can be detected and these two exposed surfaces will be hard to find much better these days. The more I look at this, not sure why I have not graded Mint(-), there is barely any noteworthy creasing, just fine edge types and barely any of those. A tiny laminate blister top right corner front and an even smaller one on the back on the top edge (again look hard). Early Roxy were the kings of beautiful, somewhat sleezy artwork and this must rank as the greatest of them all. The actual cover’s graphics show no wear at all and is still as black as night – many seem to pale and ‘grey’ over time, but this is intense black and looks stunning. Like the highest quality plasma TV’s, the darkness and detail of the panther can still be seen against the near equally black of the darkened city in the background. I cannot emphasise enough how this cover can suffer from major dulling, even fogging of the laminate, all the impact and good looks disappear on such examples, this beauty has lost little of its attractiveness and there lies the difference.

Cover Inner Gatefold: This is little short of perfection with again near pristine shiny laminate and beautiful band artwork. The central spine area sees NO laminate cracking on the hinge and again all is perfectly stuck with no bubbles or ageing. This is so fresh I I only dare open it around halfway to avoid cracking the laminate on the inner central hinge. This has loud, rich crackle on opening and is the only crackle you will hear from this set.

Top Edges: Both perfect as made and very straight too.

Bottom Edges: Exactly as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear or feathering. Record entered on this right outside back edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. The odd ultra mild abrasion being critical.

Corners: All are again practically as made and look lovely. Neat, unworn with superb shape and definition retained by all.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this classic early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner: This copy includes the Island blue lined inner which grades EX. The only blemishing is a toned glue patch on the back which is only fairly small. This retains the blue colour qutie well but not as dark as some I have seen. Little creasing and all edges unsplit. It has the pink i logo and the main text reads: ‘island records ltd basing street london w11’.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++ and practically Mint(-), with nothing more than a tiny few ultra faint and fine surface traces that just catch angled light. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence reitterated by the highest quality sound possible. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Island record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. This has to be the cleanest and best-pressed example I have yet heard. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A top class polished production that simply bursts from the speakers with immense power and grace. As devoid of surface sounds as you could get and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album that does have some quieter passages. An absolute joy from start to finish, as stated above, I have heard less than wonderful pressings of this one on what appear to be ultra clean copies. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure, one that has never been played on anything but high quality equipment. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
