Description

The Rolling Stones : Through The Past Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2) 1A / 3A
This mono album is more rare than many think as the stereo version was pressed in far greater numbers.  It plays to an excellent standard with only minimal interference and S2 in particular is superb.
Making it even rarer still is that this unboxed red Decca vinyl is in lovely condition!  It is easily the most impressive I have ever seen and has no scratches.  There is also only a single stamper on each side making it one of the earlier first pressings.
The iconic 'octagonal' cover is also in excellent condition with only a little wear on the spine.  Rarely the original 'octagonal' mono inner is included and remains in great condition with no splits.

The audio on S1 is Ex (Tracks 1 & 4 Near Mint- / T2 Ex+ / T3 VG to Ex+)

The audio on S2 is Ex+ (Tracks 4 & 5 Near Mint-)
The 'Octagonal' cover is Ex-

The original 'Octagonal' inner is Ex+
Visual grading
This mono vinyl is in lovely condition and it's difficult to find any real negatives.  Both sides have a stunning glossy sheen and there are a only a small number of very faint hairlines.  There are no scratches although track one on S2 does have one very small scuff mark but I am pleased to say this has no affect on the superb audio.  It has no groove wear and there is also not too much spindle wear so I do not think this record has been overplayed.  The run out grooves are very clean and you can easily ready the matrix info and the JT tax stamp.  The labels are also in superb condition.
Play grading
'Jumpin' Jack Flash' has barely any static on the intro and then plays clearly and with real depth and power.  There are no clicks or pops, no crackle and only a minimal touch of very light static in the background here and there which is not intrusive in any way.  A very strong Near Mint- I would say.
'Mother's Little Helper' is of the same standard with no obvious interference.  Perhaps just a little more static but again it is sporadic and very quiet.  This is Ex+ in my opinion.
'2,000 Light Years From Home' has only a little static on the intro and a handful of light static ticks but as the vocal begins the clarity is very impressive indeed.  It continues to play extremely well with only a light crackle in the quieter sections and some light clicks at the end.  A difficult one to grade - I would say it ranges between VG and Ex+.
'Let's Spend The Night Together' plays with superb audio from the very first groove.  There is no interference and from start to finish it plays remarkably well with no distortion.  It plays with great depth and grades as Near Mint-.
'You Better Move On' has hardly any static on intro and then continues to play very clearly.  About 30 seconds in there are a couple of light clicks but thereafter plays very well with only a little inner groove distortion.  This of course could be greatly reduced when played through a mono set up.
The quiet 'intro' on 'We Love You' is nigh on perfect and the piano section then plays with great clarity also.  As the vocal comes in there is some distortion but in a sense this should be accepted as a given as the penultimate and final track on any mono record will often have this when played as 'stereo'.  I think Ex is a fair grade for these two final tracks.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
'Street Fighting Man' on S2 plays extremely well from the word go.  It has only the bare minimum of light static and plays with great power and depth.  There are no clicks or pops and the fade out is also very clean.  There is no obvious intrusion on the audio and it grades as Ex+ overall.
The piano intro on 'She's A Rainbow' has barely any static and as the vocal begins the audio is stunning.  There is just a little more static in the piano/strings section but it is still quiet and non-intrusive in my opinion.  The 'louder' sections play with great definition, the sound cannot be faulted really.  Again this is worthy of an Ex+ grading.
The classic 'Ruby Tuesday' plays very clearly with only a minimal amount of light static on the intro and I do mean minimal!  The first chorus plays perfectly and as per the other tracks thus far the audio is very impressive on the top end and has only a little static in the quieter sections.  A highly creditable Ex+ once more.
If anything 'Dandelion' is even better and plays with superb audio from the outset.  Again there are no clicks, pops or crackle and no obvious static either.  I will grade as Near Mint- because there are a couple of faint clicks at the end of the fade out.
The quiet intro on 'Sittin' On The Fence' plays beautifully with no 'background' and continues to play with the same level of clarity.  Having played it twice now I can say this really is a stunning version!  There is only a little vocal distortion but again you expect that on a mono record being played through a stereo set up and when you consider it is near the end of the side.  This largely acoustic number plays incredibly well for a near 50 year old record.  The quieter section near the end is a prime example of that.  It plays so 'cleanly' with no real 'background' and the very quiet end section is just stunning.  Near Mint- without doubt.
'Honky Tonk Women' ends the album with Ex+ audio.  There is some inner groove distortion but certainly not an excessive amount and again there is not one single click or pop.  An impressive finish when you think how so many final tracks play.
In summary this relatively rare album is an excellent example of its type and the majority plays with great clarity and definition.  Any interference is kept to a minimum and as stated this mono record is visually very impressive and it would be difficult to find better.
The 'Octagonal' Cover
This iconic laminated G & L cover has only minimal wear and is definitely ones you will find today.  In fact most of the wear is restricted to the spine and even then it isn't major!  The majority is legible although most of 'Rolling' is missing due to some laminate wear.  There is also a small rub at the top of the spine and some rubbing near the bottom but by no means is it wrecked!  All of the other edges are in excellent shape with hardly any wear and all the corners remain strong.  The front cover is very clean with no marking although there are a couple of very small tears on the edge next to 'Mick' - this only affects the paper covering and not the actual cover.  The back cover is in great shape with only a couple of minor laminate splits and the stereo/mono indicator hole is in perfect condition.  The inside is nigh on perfect and the two inner flipbacks at the top and bottom are 'as new'.  There are only a couple of minor rubs on the inner spine.  All in all a very respectable cover.
The 'Octagonal' Mono sleeve
This is in superb condition with no splits or tears, hardly any wear on the edges and only minimal creasing.  So often missing from this album this unique inner will not disappoint!
The Labels
The unboxed red Decca labels are super clean with only some spindle wear, not a large amount at all.  It retains its original deep red colour and they have no marking or writing.
