The Rolling Stones : Black And Blue
This very early pressing plays with immaculate 'as new' audio as described below. The gatefold and inner are also in superb condition.

Visual grading
This is a visually stunning vinyl and at first glance looks 'as new'. Both sides retain a superb glossy sheen and S1 in particular is a fantastic example of this mega early pressing. It only has a couple of very faint hairlines and there are certainly no scratches and it basically looks unplayed. S2 is nearly of the same quality and only has a small number of faint mottle marks but they do not have any affect on the superlative audio as detailed below. I can only see one tiny spindle line on the S1 label so has only been played once or twice I would say. The run out grooves are also incredibly clean.
Play grading
There is no lead in static on S1 so you're thinking this is going to play well...and it does not disappoint! From the very first note 'Hot Stuff' plays with remarkable clarity and warmth, so much so that you would think this had never been played. The quality of the audio is 'high end' and you could not find a cleaner version. It quite simply plays as Mint with no clicks or pops and no sign of any crackle or static either. An absolutely stunning start to S1. There is complete silence in the dead wax prior to 'Hand Of Fate' which then plays to the same standard. There is just no interference whatsoever and it plays 'as new' no exaggeration. You don't find many Stones' albums over 40 years of age that perform as well as this. It may not be a firm favourite amongst fans but it is still rare to find one in this superlative condition. 'Cherry Oh Baby' again plays faultlessly and even the fade out plays with perfect precision and no 'background'. The quiet piano intro on 'Memory Motel' is sublime with not even a solitary dust tick! I'm running out of adjectives for the fantastic quality of the audio on offer here! I listen to every second so as to provide a comprehensive grading and this entire track plays as Mint from start to finish. The clarity and depth of the audio throughout is just exceptional and this is without doubt the most impressive S1 I have ever heard on this album.
You perhaps won't be surprised to hear that 'Hey Negrita' plays with the same immaculate quality as per S1 and there is no 'background' of any kind. A truly fantastic start to S2. The bluesy 'Melody' is superb from the first groove. The strong bass sound here is so high in the mix and again the separation of each instrument is perfect. There is no deterioration in clarity in the intervening 42 years. There is not one iota of interference, absolutely stunning! 'Fool To Cry' does have one light click literally on the first note and then plays with great clarity again. However, about two minutes in there are 4/5 faint ticks but they are very much in the background and non-intrusive. They are very quiet! Apart from that it plays perfectly with no other interference. 'Crazy Mama' plays so powerfully from start to finish and there is no hint of distortion. This is another Mint quality track and the fade out again plays with sublime precision, a superb end to an album displaying incredible clarity throughout.
In summary this is without doubt a final upgrade archive pressing. Aside from minimal 'background' on the one track on S2 the audio could not be any better. The fact that this vinyl has hardly ever seen a turntable explains, to a certain extent, why it plays 'as new' but it also has to have been preserved well. And it has been! With complete silence in the dead wax between every track the clarity could not be any clearer. I grade with honesty as all my regular customers know and my feedback pays testament to that. This is just one fantastic album playing with Mint audio for 99% of the time!
The Gatefold
The gatefold is in wonderful condition and has very little shelf wear. The edges have minimal rubbing only and the wide spine is in fantastic shape with no wear at all. The corners also remain very clean with only a minor amount of wear on the bottom right corners. It is very minor! The opening edge is 'as new' with no handling wear. The front and back covers are supremely clean with no marking and the inside of the gatefold is near perfect with only a little 'spotting' along the top edge. Overall this is a superb example of this cover and is very close to Near Mint in my opinion.
Inner sleeve
I am sure many would grade this as perfect but there is just a very minor touch of rubbing on a couple of edges but it is still in fantastic condition.
The labels
The labels are mega clean super clean with only one tiny spindle trace on the S1 label. Maybe it has only been played once, the audio certainly suggests that!
