Description
1965 UK Decca LK 4661 'The Rolling Stones No.2' LP and only produced in mono. This one has the controversial 'blind man' text in full on the rear.
The sleeve has a laminated front which extends back round onto the three flipbacks thus protecting the spine also.
It's in strong and solid shape with no rips, splits, tears, writing or sticker blemishes. Really nice square corners with a hint of rubbing that is hardly worth mentioning. Has some ringwear and the common laminate creasing due to the plastic shrinking over time. Also the 'plain' rears always attract grubbiness over the passing years and this one is no exception.
So physically it's sound as a pound but suffers a bit cosmetically so I rate it 7.5 /10 for condition.
The original Decca mono 'red bordered' inner sleeve is polythene lined of course. No seam splits but it has some edge and colour wear along with creasing of the paper as shown. And the plastic has been holed at the centre. So it's firm but aged and I give it 7 /10.
On to the record itself which is flat and dare I say 'shiny' and with clean silver on red labels. On my scale it reads 137g so is of a nice medium weight. The matrices on the dead wax runouts are XARL-6619-1A and XARL-6620-2A for Sides 1 and 2 respectively so I figure this is as much a candidate for a first pressing as any.
The labels at the holes show evidence of a healthy amount of spins. I've angled the disc in room daylight at the window and then inspected it under a bright light. I see some light marks and hairlines on the otherwise fine playing surfaces so visually I'm plumbing for 7 /10 for condition of the vinyl.
By way of a playtest I'm listening to it now on my Linn / Naim hi-fi system. On the dead bands between tracks and on some of the quieter sections I hear some ticks and clicks yet otherwise the album plays good with no untoward pops etc. So for aural quality I'm giving it 7.75 / 10.
