LP: The Rolf Kuhn (= Kühn) Quartet - Streamline

In 1956 Rolf Kühn moved to the USA, where John Hammond of VANGUARD records introduced him to the RONNELL BRIGHT TRIO. This trio collaborates with R.Kühn on this recording-session from November 1956. R.Bright was the piano-player in the JOHNNY PATE TRIO of that time, The Ronnell Bright Trio released it’s own LP on Vanguard in 1957 titled ”Bright Flight”, one year later (in Paris, 1958) the Trio recorded their sought-after masterpiece on POLYDOR “The Ronnie Bright Trio”.

Due to the fact that the English language has no “Umlaut” the dots on the “u” were missing and R.Kühn became R.Kuhn. The LP was released in 1957, both in USA on Vanguard Jazz Showcase (in cooperation with the Down Beat jazz magazine) and in Austria, where VANGUARD was the first and founding company of Austria's biggest label AMADEO, the first name of the label was “Austria Vanguard Ges.m.b.H / AMADEO”. They soon changed the name into “Amadeo Österreichische Schallplatten Aktiengesellschaft”.

So this is the original Austrian first pressing from 1957 on Austria Vanguard Ges.m.b.H. / AMADEO, AVRS 9005. Fully laminated cover with extensive liner-notes in English on the back. Non-flexible, ultra heavy 250 gram vinyl. Tracks includes some standards, 1 track by Bright and 4 tracks by Kühn. Rare item and a great document of an early European-American jazz collaboration.

Condition: the record looks real shiny without marks or lines, I would easily grade it visually mint--/ex++, but unfortunately there is a pressing-imperfection: the first 2 tracks on both sides have one prominent “bubble”, as 50ies pressings sometimes tend to have. Each of the 4 tracks has only one bubble, causing a few dull tics. The largest one causes ca. 30 tics next to the music, the other three are smaller and cause ca. 9 to 14 tics more behind the music. The rest of the record plays as it looks in mint-- to ex++, there are a slight distortions when Rolf Kühn blows real loud.

The thin sensitive cover is in nice shape with a littleshelfwear: all seams/spine are intact, the lamination is intact except for a small part in the middle of the spine, slight cornerwear, slight discolouration on the back’s left side, overall ex. Outstanding cover-condition considering it's age of nearly 60 years...

Zustand: die LP hat einen schönen Glanz und ist ohne Lines oder Marks, würde ich eigentlich ohne zu Zögern als mint--/ex++ einstufen, leider hat die Platte aber einen Preßfehler: auf jeder Seite haben die ersten beiden Stücke ein erhabenes Press-Blässchen, so wie es leider bei 50er-Jahre Pressungen immer mal vorkommen kann. Jedes der 4 betroffenen Stücke hat nur ein Blässchen, diese verursachen einige dumpfe “Ticks”. Das grösste verursacht ca. 30 Ticks neben der Musik, die übrigen drei sind kleiner und verursachen 9 bis 14 tics, mehr im Hintergrund zur Musik. Der Rest der LP spielt wie optisch zu erwarten in mint-- bis ex++, es gibt leichte Verzerrungen wenn Rolf Kühn sehr laut bläst.

Das dünne empfindliche Cover ist in schönem Zustand mit nur leichten Lagerspuren, alle Kanten sind intakt, die Laminierung ist intakt bis auf in der Mitte der seitlichen Kante, leichtes Wear an den Ecken, leichte Verfärbung auf der linken Seite der Rückseite; insgesamt in ex. Ein wirklich schöner Cover-Zustand wenn man das Alter von fast 60 Jahren bedenkt...

Alle Platten wurden professionell gereinigt, entweder von mir (Hannl Mikro) oder von den Vorbesitzern (Okki Nokki, Loricraft o.Ä.). Anschließend wurden sie nur wenige Male abgespielt bzw. nur einmal von mir zum Bewerten angehört (komplett oder in Ausschnitten). Optische Bewertung erfolgt in Tageslicht, in normalen Kunstlicht & unter einer sehr hellen Halogenlampe. Platten kommen mit neuer hochwertiger Innenhülle & in einer Schutzhülle. Bitte beachten: auch prof. gereinigte Platten können einige Staubpartikel haben; “eingefangen” während optischer & akkustischer Bewertung, Fotografieren oder den wenigen Abspielungen der Vorbesitzer.

Grading & Cleaning:

• all records have been cleaned on a professional record cleaning machine, either by me (Hannl Mikro) or by the pre-owners (Okki Nokki, Loricraft or the like). After cleaning the records have been played just a few times (or only once by me for playgrading)

• I playgrade each record (completely or at least in parts) on my Rega Planar 9, high-end Moving Coil cartridge by EINSTEIN/ EMT TU-3 SFL (please consider that the playback might differ a bit depending on your own equipment)

• I also visually grade cleaned records in daylight, in normal artificial light & under a strong halogen lamp

• only an unplayed record is mint, my highest grading for a used record is mint- . My basic gradings are: mint – ex – vg

• cleaned records are stored in a new pro innersleeve and they are placed in a PVC protection-sleeve

• pl. note: even pro cleaned records may have received some dust particles during visual-/play-grading, photographing or few pre-owner playbacks
