HIS INCREDIBLE second album, a record that has become a classic in its field and, arguably, Trower's greatest achievment. The reason? Well, its all about that guitar - thick, deep rich sustain, endless vibrato howling solos and gentle melodies. The Hendrix comparion is valid, of course, but I think Trower take the guitar into areas that Hendrix only touched briefly, in particular the heavy blues rock of the opening salvo 'Day Of The Eagle' and the slightly more meloncholic title track. This is Trower in full unrestricted flight propped up by two of the greatest, but like the Hendrix Experience, unheralded heroes in drummer Reg Isidore and bassist/vocalist James Dewer a man who could easily have slipped into a sort of Jack Bruce Cream cameo.

The material is uniformly GREAT. Every track forms an essential piece of the sonic tapestry with the whistful ballads sitting meaningfully amidst the rampaging over amped blues. Tracks like 'The Fool And Me' and 'Little Bit Of Sympathy' pack a hefty hard rock punch set about with care and precision rather than meaningless bluster and volume. Perhaps the best track that fuses both worlds (certainly my favourite) is 'Too Rolling Stoned' a weighty blues buster with a steamroller riff and oodles of energy which inceases in stature during the breakdown half way through turning the track over to Trower for a barrage of blistering, howling lead guitar that takes us on a journey of discovery.  

I would say that this is an essential addition to any early seventies rock collection. If you are a fan of guitar then shame on you for not owning a copy.

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.

Pressing: Chrysalis, UK, 1974 - green label original

Vinyl: Superb clean and shiny condition. Just a few visible spindle marks on labels but no other signs of use. Grades as a superb MINT-!

Cover: Again only minimal signs of use. Issued in a beautifully illustrated single cover - this is the original first pressing with the rare spine pinches top and bottom. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Spine is straight, stiff and totally uncrushed. Just a hint of handling. Beautiful and impossible to find like this 44 years after release. Grades as MINT-!
