'Out-Sider Records present the first ever vinyl reissue of Robbie The Werewolf's At The Waleback, originally released in 1964. With his long red hair and matching beard, Robbie The Werewolf - a folksinger of the frantic variety with a fetish for monsters - was a striking performer with a manic stage presence, acting out his songs as much as singing them. His set consisted of his original songs and uniquely reworked versions of folk standards, played on a beat-up twelve-string guitar. This inspired some of the most bizarre songs ever committed to vinyl: listen to "Count Dracula" and its proto-psychedelic, amazing echo effects or the insane DIY rocker "Rockin' Werewolf". It was at The Wale Back in L.A one heady night in 1964, that Robbie's solo act was captured for posterity and released as a tiny private pressing. A few years later, Robbie Robison would become a founding member of L.A psychedelic band Clear Light. But that's another story. This incredibly strange music is championed by lovers of the wonderful & weird such as Jello Biafra. At The Waleback is a time capsule to the post-beatnik, pre-psychedelic/hippie scene from L.A. 'Remarkable early private press that manages to be a folk LP and a parody of a folk LP at the same time. Half of it is monster-fan piss-takes on standards such as "Tom Dooley" and "Tip Toe Through The Tulips", the other half is Robbie originals of varying quality, hitting an unforgettable apex with the echo-laden Count Dracula track, which warns us to '...watch out for those vampires, some of them are QUEER'. Also daring for the time marijuana and sex jokes, and a general bohemian counterculture feel to it all. Some of his in-between song jokes aren't all that funny, but the Santa Monica crowd had had enough red wine & weed to cheer and laugh at pretty much everything, creating a nice vibe.
