1924 country recording
In terms of number of recordings, Gid Tanner and His Skillet Lickers was the most prolific of the Georgia string bands of the 1920s and 30s. They typified the unrestrained Georgia string band style, featuring comedy skits, fiddle breakdowns, and the hillbilly showman personality of Gid Tanner. The band featured Tanner and Clayton McMichen on fiddle, Fate Norris on a barely audible banjo, and Riley Puckett on guitar.
Beyond the group as a whole, Gid and Riley made many solo records for Columbia as well. This is one of those many Riley Puckett recordings and it pairs the songs "Whoa Mule" and "Railroad Bill." It's from a session on September 11, 1924 and was just before Columbia started their Country records series. This is real old timey guitar playing and country singing. This is a 15040-D and is one of those 'new process' recordings so it started off with a pretty clean surface – and still has it!

CONDITION: E+ This record is in excellent condition, that's a rarity for these rural recording that got a work out on wind up phonographs with blunt needles. Comes with original company sleeve.
