Description

THE RESIDENTS, ESKIMO BOXED PROJECT, DBL 1 SIDED WHITE VINYL(RZ7906) 1979, LIMITED TO 100 PAIRS FOR THE SPECIAL BOXED PROJECT THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN!!!!! Well, there are certainly a lot of rare Residents items up on Ebay right now, so I thought I's put something up that was really rare, probably one of the most rare of all the Residents items, except for perhaps the 3rd R&R Box. The first pressing of 10,000 copies of Eskimo came on white vinyl and says "FIRST PRESSING - 1979" on the inside of the gatefold cover. The following 45,000 copies were on black vinyl. In 1980 the gatefold cover was eliminated for a standard record jacket and the Eskimo stories which were on the inside were moved onto the record sleeve. 100 pairs of 1 sided discs on white vinyl were also pressed to be used in an Eskimo Boxed Set. Now, incredible as at may seem, perhaps not to Rez Heads, they were going to be placed in a box covered with animal skin, perhaps this was too ambitious, perhaps it was a little nuts!!!! This boxed set was going to cost $150.00 with a $75.00 deposit, well this just didn't happen exactly as planned, here's what was sent out to those who had made the $75.00 deposit:

"Dear Patient Eskimo Box Buyer,

No, you have not been forgotten.

Due to many recent hectic projects, such as the Ralph Travelling Festival and the new Residents book, the box sets have been postponed until later this year. They should be completed sometime during the late summer, in numerical order. When your box is finished, you will be notified as to shipping procedures and the balance of your order. Thanks for being so patient -- we at Ralph feel that you will be deeply pleased with the resulting product, and that it will be well worth the wait. We have decided on more expensive materials than were originally planned, and the final result will be a break-even project at best. But they will be lovely.

If you require a refund, now is the time to ask. However, be forewarned that you will not be able to reclaim your box set, as we will assign your number to the next name on our (growing) waiting list, and we will send their deposit to you. Also, due to the overwhelming demand, only 2 boxes have been retained for future auctions (instead of 5), and these will likely cost $$$$ if they are ever offered for sale. (Yes, all this hard-sell is a bit much, but it is true nonetheless.)

Thanks once again!

Until all is sold and we die,

Ralph Records"

And once it arrived a note that read: "Please accept these two, one sided discs, as a gift. We are sorry this project will not be completed. all the best Ralph Records.

Well, now as to the music, Eskimo was unlike anything anyone had heard before. Instead of an album made up of songs, The Residents produced a series of acoustic landscapes: each track is the sound of a story taking place, rather than the traditional song telling a story.?The idea for the album is supposed to have come from the band's former collaborator, the Mysterious N. Senada, who had disappeared in the early 70s to search for music among the Eskimos (legend has it that he re-appeared during the making of the album with a tape of sound samples and a jar of arctic air to record). The Residents teamed up with drummer Chris Cutler and Don Preston (formerly a keyboard player for Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention), as well as their regular collaborator, Snakefinger. Inspired by such pieces of pop culture as the famous Santa Claus Coca-Cola ads, The Residents set about inventing an anthropological background for their Eskimos which didn't bear much resemblance to reality, but instead was based on pop perceptions of the northern peoples (nevertheless, the USSR release was classified as a "cultural documentary"). Each track relates a story which was told in writing on the inside of the album's gatefold cover. The stories are progressively more complex and dig deeper into the fictional Eskimo culture, starting with a simple Walrus Hunt and ending with a confrontation with the spirit world and a Festival of Death celebrating the end of the six-month night.
The album shows, as did the mini-ballet Six Things to a Cycle on Fingerprince, the influence of Harry Partch. Like Partch, The Residents invented their own language and instruments. Most of the fake Eskimo tongue is made up of highly distorted English and is sung while breathing in to give it an alien texture. As the album progresses you can hear the slow invasion of American culture into the Eskimo lives as the Eskimo's spiritual leader, the Angakok, leads them in chants whose nonsense language becomes corrupted with phrases such as "Coca-Cola Adds Life". This was and is one of the greatest projects ever undertaken by The Residents in my opinion, sheer genius!!!!!

THE RESIDENTS
with guests:
SNAKEFINGER
CHRIS CUTLER
DON PRESTON

Tracks:
 The Walrus Hunt
 Birth
 Arctic Hysteria
 The Angry Angakok
 A Spirit Steals a Child
 The Festival of Death

The vinyl has not been touched until tonight, I just wanted to play it to see how it sounds, not bad for colored vinyl, I would rate it very good, with just a slight tick here and there, it comes with the Eskimo pic used for the picture disc copies and that some people have tried to sell on Ebay as a poster, and it is enclosed like a mummy in a thick plastic sleeve.

This is not a business, it is not a record store, even though I have far more rare records, cds and other weird things lying around here than any store could imagine, they are all mine, which I have collected since 1960, I collected records like some people collect baseball cards, but now find myself surrounded by thousands of records, cds and other weird things and they must all go!!!!!

Canada is $6.00, rest of world $10.00, $2.00 for each additional item, I ship First Class International which takes about 10 to 14 days to most countries, insured items are shipped Global Priority and take between 3 to 6 days to most countries. Contact me if your sending money orders, international buyers Paypal only. Insured International orders add an extra $20.00 to package cost, I cannot be responsible for orders lost or damaged that are not insured, I have never had a package lost or damaged yet, 2 were about a month in delivery, and 1 came back to me with the wrong address, so it's really not that risky a deal, if you ask me.
