Description

I pulled this listing last week as I decided I wanted to authenticate the message that was writen on the back of the poster,  I have left the original Auction text with the information on the Provenance of the poster.  A special thanks to eBayer and R.E.M. Fan fritzorama whom lead me to believe that the message was written by R.E.M.'s Manager Jefferson Holt (managed the band from 1981-1996) based on handwriting samples he had from his original fully autographed Hibtone 7", which included Jefferson's autograph.  I contacted Jefferson at his current Business venture Daniel13.com.  Withing minutes he confirmed via email that the scan of the poster I sent to him was "Yes that's my horrible scribble. No doubt about it"  he followed that up with a second email which stated "If memory serves the photo was taken by Steve Thackston at a show in South Carolina.... Columbia ?  And we made the poster. Copies of the email exchange will be included with the poster.

ORIGINAL LISTING TEXT

Original Gig Poster from 1981/1982 which was printed as a generic Venue poster, specific date and time information was added later as Gigs were booked. This poster has a pretty amazing history, and has a message written on the back that I am reasonably certain was from either a member of R.E.M. or Band management when it was sent to the original owner whom I got this from 18 years ago. In 1996 before most people had home PC's and Internet I paid for a Goldmine Classified ad looking for R.E.M. and U2 collectibles. I received a letter from, and ultimately a phone conversation with a New Jersey collector whom had followed the band since late 1981 when he first heard Radio Free Europe. He was in the process of selling off his collection. He told me that back in the day he was unable to find the Hibtone single when it was released in the local shops. He ultimately contacted the band about where he could purchase a copy and subsequently did order it through the mail.

I don't recall that I even purchased any records as the Holy Grail Hibtone Single was the one item he was holding onto. Just in gratitude of talking to a big fellow R.E.M. fan he mailed me an envelope of clippings. I never really collected clippings so I really didn't look through the envelope until sometime later when I found the poster!! All clippings will be included with the poster.

The message on the back of the Poster says "Hope you got the single OK. There is a card in here (in the original envelope the poster was sent in) with the name of the Distributors that carry the single + on the back a record shop that does mail order of the single and lots of other good stuff - both places also have the new Jason and the Nashville Scorchers EP which is great"

A number of years later I tried to contact the original owner to confirm the identity of whom wrote the message on the poster, but from an internet search sadly it appears he has passed away. The Jason and the Nashville Scorchers EP was released in 1982, which accurately dates the time this message was written. In addition R.E.M. were great fans of this band, and had them open many early R.E.M. Gigs. All the evidence points to this being legitimately written by a band member or someone within the organization. In 1982 that would not have consisted of many people. I have found no early samples of Band member’s handwriting to narrow this down but I'm sure some hard core collectors may be able to match it up.

The condition of the poster in VG++, there are no tears or rips. In order to mail it, it was originally carefully folded. As you can see from the photos, some of the message has bleed through to the front of the poster. Some of the words in the message are smeared but legible.
