R.E.M. AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE Vinyl 45055-1 Warner Bros. US ‘92 FIRST PRESS NM.

Vinyl is a nice NM, Glossy. Almost looks unplayed. Jacket has 2 “sawcuts,” one front bottom-left usual size and the other front lower/right about half the normal size. Otherwise jacket and full-size special photo / LINER NOTES Insert, NM very nice. The photo side of this Insert, with 4 kind-of “silver-tone” photos of the Guys, would be great framed and hung-up on the wall. You know, just get a regular 12” LP frame. I’ve done this with jackets and other Vinyl LP Album Artwork / Graphics. This being one of the great parts about jackets etc. Awesome artwork, like especially the 60’s and early 70’s stuff. Those Psychedelic covers are my favorite. These frames in no way damage the jackets. Some guys frame the vinyl records themselves. I had a beautiful old original Elvis SUN 45rpm record. I actually bought a special “Archival” type frame with UV protective glass, special matting etc. The design of these make framing a vinyl record easy-as-pie. I got extremely lucky and bought that SUN Elvis from a guy who was an awesome collector and dealer. That record was an absolutely FULL VG+ / VG++ (Excellent.) I sold it a few years back with the frame. Another guy bought it quickly and was very pleased with the condition. Those Elvis SUNS are absolutely RARE RARE RARE!! And in decent condition, plus there are reproductions / reissues (ok), counterfeits etc. But there are several things to look for to verify authenticity.

This was a great R.E.M. Album from 1992. Featuring Drive / The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight / Everybody Hurts / Man On the Moon and others. There were 6 Singles in-all that were released. The Singles from this album got major air play / Mainstream radio play. You know, much depends on the record Label when you have a Band. When these guys went and signed with Warner Bros., it opened-up a lot more opportunities for them. Warner really promoted the Band and their great music, and they had huge advantages over many other labels. Excellent people and talent throughout the huge Warner Bros. / WEA (“Warner Bros. / Elektra Records / Atlantic Records”) Enterprises. Worldwide, not just the United States. Of course, when it’s a Group like R.E.M. and their STYLE, talent and innovation has a huge part in it!! The whole budding Environmental Conservation Theme, Going Green, Political concerns like Voter Registration / Rock the Vote! / Motor-Voter Registration through people’s Driver’s Licenses—just having people with the necessary “Platform,” concerned with such great causes, was all-new territory in these times (late 1980’s - 1990’s.) The full-size Liner Notes Insert is great because it’s really easy to read! Unlike CD’s where they cram everything into a small jewel case—Later / NOW—R.E.M. being one of the groups back in the day, who took advantage and used the “Long Box” packaging for their CDs. I worked in the industry as some of you know, and I remember there were technically 3 different CD packages. It’s a long time ago now, but we had in the selection / release’s Bill-Of-Materials (a sort-of blueprint that told the mfg departments EXACTLY how to manufacture and package and ship out the door, each individual music selection. Well, those “Long Boxes” were a jewel case inside a maybe 14” x 7” x 1/2” thick flat-type box. Interestingly, the supposed original design of these was to FIT THESE NEW CDs, IN EXISTING RECORD STORE LP ALBUM BINS. Idk maybe 2 side-by-side would fit in the bins in the store, and their long length / height would cause them to stick out enough for customers to see the product clearly, browse through them, etc. So we had many CDs released with this packaging in the first years of CDs (maybe a decade total.). Eventually everything went to just Jewel Case packaging—or possibly Digipaks (a very thin profile type of case—singles would often be in Digipaks.). There were exceptions with special packaging, of course. I think “W” was the code in the computer for these long boxes LOL. Can’t remember if “W” was standing-for something or not?? “J” was jewel case, that certainly makes sense.

***THIS***: Lastly, I want to touch-on a surprisingly little-known fact about this R.E.M. Album, Automatic For the People. Led Zeppelin Bassist and Keyboardist JOHN PAUL JONES was absolutely featured on this album! He did the Orchestral / String-Instrument Arrangements on several of the best tracks: Drive; The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight, Everybody Hurts (A COMMAND PERFORMANCE!!), and Nightswimming. For those of you who were unaware of this (and many were / still are), just think of “Everybody Hurts.” Think and remember that music. Sounds superb, right? Well there was a very good reason.
