This is a 16 inch BROWN WAX RADIO TRANSCRIPTION of an AUDITION RADIO PROGRAM. BERT HIRSCH & HIS ORCHESTRA. Talk about RARE...this is IT! ONLY KNOWN COPY, and until now..no one knew this one existed! No date on it, but going by the arrangements and the Bass Sax used, it sounds like it was recorded between 1932 & 1934. Mostly musical numbers, girl trio, etc. But there a few spots where Bunny Berigan chimes in playing behind with a cup mute. He even throws in 4 bars from Louis Armstrong's CORNET CHOP SUEY!. This was in a folder that was marked...DO NOT PLAY - NO GOOD. He was right, it's not good, it's Great! Very well recorded too. Etched in the Brown Wax is..AUDITION PROGRAM - BERT HIRSCH It is one-sided, Vynl and plays at 33 1/3 RPM. The Musical Director of this program was BERT HIRSCH, whom many collectors will remember from the HIT-OF-THE-WEEK paper records that came out during the beginning of the depression.
Many years ago, I went to an estate auction in Connecticut, and purchased a couple of large boxes of old Radio Transcriptions that belonged to the estate of BERT HIRSCH. They had been sealed for many years. I paid a great deal for these as there was some clown with deep pockets who wanted them to nail to the walls of his music room for effect!! Even after the auction he wanted to buy a few from me for that reason...didn't happen. As I don't have a transcription player here, I rigged one together so I could hear a few of these recordings. The sound quality is just amazing! I only listened to a few. I have looked everywhere to see if these shows exist anywhere else and came up with nothing. BERT HIRSCH was a violinist, bandleader and musical contractor for many years in the New York area. He used the top men of the era like Bunny Berigan, the Dorsey Brothers and many more on his records and radio broadcasts. I read that a very drunk FATS WALLER performed on the FOX FUR TRAPPERS program....once. It wasn't on the couple shows that I played, but there many here that I'll be listing that I haven't been able to listen to! Why?? Divorce, 'nuff said.
The condition of this record is amazing. Quite possibly never played before, but can't be certain. Still has the original sleeve. I really haven't cleaned these more than a piece of damp flannel and lightly wiped with dry flannel. Light sleeve scuffs, but no major scratched or skips. And please excuse the photos..I did what I could with them...they are shiny as hell and the glare was a problem, you can also see the reflection of my hands and the camera in some of them.
