Description

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS VERY GOOD PLUS PLUS(VG++). Under bright light there are some minor superficial topical marks (mainly sleeve marks) are VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are not visually distracting. The vinyl looks great. The original luster is intact.



(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

 

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

 

(d)           We grade the cover as VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+). There is some minor staining on the back. The spine is in fair condition with some splitting in the center (around 3" long) see pics. This is a thick cardboard cover, American style. 


(e)            This is the mono deep groove pressing.


(f)            Original yellow & black Prestige Records mono microgroove label


(g)          hand etched matrix numbers in dead wax area.



(h)          "RVG" is marching stamped the deadwax area. This usually indicates the involvement of legendary mastering engineer Rudy Van Gelder. 



(I)            This LP was originally recorded in 1957 but was not released until 1962. This is the original '62 first pressing.


ALLMUSIC Review:

The distinctive pianist Red Garland, tenor saxophonist John Coltrane (then 31 and already breaking away from the pack), and trumpeter Donald Byrd, along with the supportive bassist George Joyner and drummer Art Taylor, perform five jazz standards on this CD reissue. Highlights include "Soft Winds," "Undecided," and an explosive version of "Two Bass Hit" that foreshadowed the rendition that Trane would record with Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley the following year. High-quality hard bop from some true "Young Lions."
