I love the good old days when one LP would give you the opportunity to hear 2 great concert halls and 2 great conductors. Compact discs can sound really clean, but all the concert halls sound the same w/that digital blackness!
This is the famous last pairing of Rubinstein and Reiner. Apparently their egos clashed during the session, but they managed by their sheer talent to make a great recording together. Perhaps that’s why side 2 was recorded somewhere else? The sound is big and spacious. It’s darker than the “woodier” Boston sound and some people, like Harry Pearson, are very into the Reiner/Chicago sound. I like it, but I like the more immediate sound on side 2 even better! Hey, this LP gives you 2 kinds of sound! BTW, you can’t beat the performances either.
Condition wise, side 1 has a few ticks, but the sound is still wonderful. Really noisy LPs get rejected and not sold on eBay. Anyone who buys LPs from the original owners, as opposed to selected LPs from dealers knows that the majority of “golden age” classical are too noisy to play. Side 2 is about 85% NM. In fact, it would have been accepted as a new LP back in the day. Enjoy!
BTW, this LP is sonically preferable to the 180 gram reissue from Classic Records. Yes, the Classic has a more extended top end, but that top end comes with a nasty bump in the upper midrange that makes the midrange sound like sour milk. Yuck!
As you can see in the photo, the jacket is VG+ or better.
