S eX Pi S T0L S
"ANARCHY TOUR" "FREEBIE"
tracks are
' ANARCHY IN THE UK ' & ' I WANNA BE ME '
Have a good listen to both tracks in the player below
...and of course - don't forget to turn it up !!!
This record is visibly only very slightly uneven upon rotation... it is certainly NOT dished or warped... and it has no cracks or nasty edge chips.
...so best listen out carefully out for that as well ; )
*
So O.K.
Here's something special for all you part-time PunkS out there ; )
We believe that this 45 is almost certainly one of the most unusual...
and possibly one of the rarest S eX Pi S T0L S items
that you will see up for auction on Ebay
for quite some time !
We believe that ALL records are made to be played !!! ...And although of course it's always fun to have a records like this & give them a DJ spin-out from time to time...
We have decided that this particular 45 would obviously be far better off (and ultimately much safer ; ) in the hands of a serious P u n k or S eX Pi S T0L S collector...
We consider that this 45 is now likely to be a unique relic from the very earliest days of punk... Was it "just another tax dodge"? [as somewhat prophetically sung by Johnny Rubbish in the 'I want to Live in NW3 4JR' (Anarchy in the UK) 45rpm United Artists UP 36405 - 1978] ...is it maybe even rarer than just the very next copy of 'God Save the Queen' on A&M to mysteriously re-surface again ? ...Who knows ? ...So we'll leave all of that for you to decide ... As in the annals of Rock 'n' Roll history, it seems to us that in the early days of UK punk rock that McClaren [and maybe even the S eX Pi S T0L S themselves], were not wholly adverse to re-writing their own history on a daily basis ; ) ...and everyone else of course, has also been constantly re-writing it ever since ; ) ...Hence, some pretty exhaustive research by us on this particular 45 so far has drawn a total blank... Generations later, various nuggets of information and our own vague memories from 1976/'77 as bored & snotty teenagers, have still caused us to hazard a guess, that maybe either the Pistols or McClaren himself might have run this one off in limited quantities to help accelerate their rise to the top of the heap by gaining more "cash from chaos" and maybe raise up some extra ready cash bunce during their now infamous and 'failed' ... ANARCHY TOUR.
All evidence for either McLaren's or the Pistols actual involvement here is of course purely speculative here... But it is known that McClarens company, Glitterbest, retained all of the rights to all of the demo recordings as well as the master tapes... and so we consdier that is also not too unreasonable to summise that this 45 was maybe something either he or his close associates were also involved with too. McClaren himself has also been said to have prefered the 'Spunk' LP version over the standard release of 'Never Mind the...' - but in terms of any appropriate sound comparison by us down here in 'the bunker', our own original copy of the 'Spunk' LP has now long gone... Yet still, we'd hazard a guess, that this 'gig freebie' almost certainly contains a demo mixes, if not the same actual mixes as may be found on 'original' copies of the actual 'Spunk' LP.
In regards to so called 'semi-official' Pistols issues :- sometime back in early those days ( maybe possibly even sometime later in early to mid '77 ) ...I was offered one of a pile supposedly very Ltd. 'private pressing' LP's (i.e. the black 'n' yellow print pic. sleeve 'No FUTURE 'LP ... possibly just another variant of the infamous 'SPUNK' LP ?) ...But as with most things emanating from the ' Pi S T0L S ' stable, the record was of course offered at a seriously hyper-inflated cash only price; and in this case offered up direkt from 'the boys' themselves from behind and under the counter at an impromptu and somewhat frenzied word of mouth press & punter fuelled gathering, held in the Beaufort Market (which was then situated next to 'Seditionairies' in the Kings Rd, Chelsea). So I didn't buy into it...
In regards to this particular event from my own mispent youth... Rumours were flying around amongst all us snotty kids that maybe the Pistols were going to play up on a roof in the Kings Road, Chelsea [ but latter thinking is we were probably all duped into some kind of publicity stunt aimed at dragging us poor little 'punters' into the Beaufort Market to buy the record ] - And as for the Pi S T0L S playing up on the roof ?... Well of course... on that day at least it never happened... and apart form the odd bit of Punk bashing from a few Teds and some bikers over the road in the supermarket, it all turned out to just another normal day up the Kings Road... But all this is only mentioned here to illustrate that in my opinion, and as based on my own direct experience at the time, that both the Pi S T0L S / McClaren and their 'entourage', certainly weren't in any way shy at all when it came down to maybe pressing up a few their own records... and maybe most especially if they also thought they'd be accumulating even more 'filthy lucre' by doing so ; ) ...
Other typical examples of this sort of thing were also flying about all over the place in the late 70's... For example, around that time whilst eagerly digging about and collecting up my piles of punk 45's; I regularly used to come across such things as the white label single sided and 'banned' / 'swearing' version of 'What have we Got...' Sham 69... ( a real classic if ever I've heard one ) ...other typical examples also included hand drawn label stuff purporting to be direct from the Television Personalities - things such as the 'Live at the Roundhouse' E.P. - etc. and so on... But all of that's another story. And so regarding this particular S eX Pi S T0L S 45 ...We can honestly say with absolute certainly that this the only copy of this Pi S T0L S item that we have ever seen in this particular format. We have also never even seen or heard of this 45 ever appearing anywhere with these specific matrixes apart from on this actual record... ( and we've certainly seen a whole lot of Pi S T0L S 45's in our time !!! ).
The ANARCHY TOUR itself is of course very well documented, and was dogged with all manner of problems right from the very outset, with the original 19 scheduled gigs eventually becoming just three... We of course did not attend any of the gigs in the S eX Pi S T0L S infamous Anarchy Tour ourselves ... nor did we ever see the S eX Pi S T0L S perform live... But to us it does not seem to be beyond reason, that maybe they were also pumping out their own copies of their records to the very few people who actually managed to get in to see them actually perform at these apparently poorly attended gigs... And why not indeed - Good on 'em... Especially as McClaren's Glitterbest reportedly owned all of the rights to all of the demo's and master recordings... McClaren was certainly a more than shrewd chap, and who else would maybe have had the foresight in those days to somehow retain copyright on all the Demo & Master recordings ...Who ? ... E.M.I. ? ...Obviously not ...Not only had E.M.I. ( a.k.a. Every Mistake Imaginable ) already become a bit of a joke by losing whatever advance they already paid to the band, they then apparently got 'cold feet' and had to pay out further bunce bundles in order to get rid of both them and 'Glitterbest' well... ; ) ...sooner rather than later on... and by the time they had also been 'dumped' by A&M... it seems by all accounts that McClaren had pocketed way over £100,000 without the band ever even releasing an LP... (Nice work if you can get it lads... ha ha ; ) ... and so the "Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle" had come to fruition ... and the rest as they say... is history...
Anyway ...as for us... This 'gig freebie' 45rpm is a far more recent aquisition... We had known the whereabouts of this 45rpm for a few years... But to be honest we didn't really pay much attention to it at all until it after was aquired... We can honestly say that we ourselves have absolutely no reason at all to believe that this particular 'gig freebie' 45rpm is anything other than the 'genuine article', and we tend to think that it was most certainly pressed in 1976... But who knows what really went on... and so again, we'll leave all of that for you to decide.
O.K. ~ with all that said and done, lets back to some of the details as they present themselves on this particular record :
Intriginguely to us at least - the B-side ( 'I wanna Be Me' ) - also has the words 'Police Crime 1976' written into the matrix (... nice touch ) - please see pictures.
The 'hand written' matrix details are as follows ( ...also please see pictures for further sleuthing ; )
'ANARCHY IN THE UK' matrixes B L % 640112 A
'I WANNA BE ME' matrixes DEMO EMI 2566 [ next is section upside down / inverted ] BL % 640118 B [ then - right way again up is....] POLICE Crime 1976 X
There are no other matrix marks, writing or 'scratch-outs' visible on either side - NO 'porky prime cut' insignia & maybe more interestingly No 'LYN' or 'LYNTONE' references either ...
We also tend to think that the version of 'Anarchy in the UK ' here on this 45 rpm maybe a single track recording, and not a double track recording as maybe heard on the later standard 1st issue demo or 'straight' issues of this recording... and that maybe this 45 was pressed up direct from the original single track master tape recording ?
'I Wanna Be Me' seems to us as if it could also be a single track, and not double track recording ?..
As stated earlier ...we sold a ist issue Demo quite some time back now and so cannot reasonably compare the two recordings here ...Nevertheless and to us at least the versions we have here both still sound punchier and rawer than we remember elsewhere...
But again ...we'll leave all of that for you to decide.
The recording samples given here are raw wav. files taken directly from this record via our 'Numark' TTi
with the speed control centred at 45rpm. - NO filters, EQ or other 'tricks' have been used to clean-up the sound .
What you hear is what you get - and this 45 sounds even better if you crank it up through a decent Hi-Fi system !!!
*
so....
IF YOU WANNA TO GRAB YOURSELF A REAL RARE PIECE OF 'Punk'-ROCK 'n' ROLL HISTORY...
HERE'S A CHANCE THAT IS MOST CERTAINLY NOT TO BE SNiFFeD AT ; )
*
- TO SUM IT ALL UP -
THIS IS A SERIOUSLY RARE & HIGHLY UNUSUAL 45 rpm
THAT STILL RETAINS A LOT OF ITS ORIGINAL GLOSS .
*
ON THE DOWNSIDE...
VISIBLY IT ALSO HAS PLENTY OF SCUFFING, SOME LIGHT HAIRLINES & OTHER MARKS
FROM THE PREVIOUS OWNER/OWNERS... BUT NO HEAVY SCRATCHES OR GOUGING
*
AND SO PUTTING ALL 'MINOR' DEFECTS AS LISTED HERE ASIDE
...AS YOU CAN HEAR IN THE PLAYER ABOVE -
- THIS RECORD OVERALL STILL PLAYS REALLY WELL -
OFFERING UP A TRULY RAW & PUNCHY SOUND
*
THIS IS A 100% SUPERB RAW & CLASSIC PUNK ROCK 45 FROM START TO FINISH !
*
So there you have it ...an impossibly rare 45 ...and so far as we know
...it is maybe also housed in it's original plain white sleeve ( ? ) ...with

happy bidding ; )
